Behind every person cared for, is a person who needs care too.

A parent who attends the respite retreat for parents of children with disabilities is offered the opportunity to also receive reflexology treatments, because they need every bit of care we can provide.

Claudia Hammond: Dealing with feeling overwhelmed 06/06/2026

46 percent of people feel burned out by work.

More than half of sick days are due to stress or depression or anxiety.

In a world where stress has come to be seen as a status symbol, does it seem like you have to justify having a quiet weekend doing nothing much? Do you feel like you have to look at your emails and messages even when you are not supposed to be working.

What we are talking about is chronic stress, which is when your cortisol levels rise then you never get the chance to properly relax again. Eventually that can cause all sorts of problems with your health.

I loved this interview with psychologist Claudia Hammond about the causes of overwhelm and her brilliantly simple strategies to alleviate it.

We all know that being a parent of a child with disabilities is a vital and treasured role, and can sometimes stretch us to our limits as well.

We also know that when much of our energy is dedicated to some form of caregiving that, over time, it can become very hard to "switch off" the caregiving part of ourselves and fill our own cup.

This is why wise time out in an environment away from home can be really helpful.

The challenge is finding somewhere to do that!

This is where the Respite Retreat for Parents of Children with Disabilities can be extremely useful, because it is a period of total removal from everyday responsibilities, in an environment that cares about and understands, recognises and normalizes the experience of parenting a didabled child (of any age). And it is one of the most special and fulfilling things I get to offer each year ❀️

This year's retreat will be held in late August in Rotorua.

The late August dates give people time to apply for funding if they choose to do so.

There is detailed information in the event page link just below and your questions and enquiries are welcome.

It's really tough when we witness our children experiencing anxiety. Really tough.πŸ˜ͺ

Anxiety can be a physically and mentally awful feeling. I know because I’ve been there.

Anxiety isn't "just worry" or "overthinking". It is something that happens when some deep glands in the brain become over active and react to everything in an "over" way. It takes a LOT of deliberate mental control and a capacity to tolerate this "over-ness" (instead of giving in to it which is waaaay easier!) to reverse the brain's reactions.

Sometimes you come across a gem, and this is one : Karen Young - Hey Sigmund work is superb, and useful. 😍

If your kid (or grandkid) experiences anxiety this is really worth a look ❀️

Flexible, rested feet are happy feet!

What does a Reflexologist do on a late autumn weekend? Socks on and feet up by the fireside!

Why?? Because our feet work so hard for us they deserve to be put up!

For a normal human standing on two feet, the average pressure ranges from 0.5 to 0.8kg per square centimeter!

But pressure changes significantly depending on whether you are standing on both feet, standing on one foot, walking, or wearing certain types of footwear...

When you walk the pressure increases momentarily when pushing off a single foot, occasionally spiking up to 1.0 to 2.0kg per square centimeter on the forefoot. 🦢🦢🦢

If you wear stiletto heels you can exert up to 13kg per square centimeter of pressure, which is roughly 15 timedls more than an average footprint, simply because the weight is concentrated on a pinpoint area. πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

Surprisingly, despite weighing thousands of kilograms, an elephant's large footprint means the pressure exerted on the ground is roughly 0.6kg per square centimeter 🐘🐘🐘

Have you put your feet up this weekend???

I don't know whether to feel sad or happy...

Maybe sad, because it's only just May and emails from people who have attended the Retreat for Parents of Children with Disabililites in recent years have been showing up in my inbox for the past two weeks.

They are asking "When is the next one???"

They are saying "I'm desperate".

One of the messages I received from a mother said what they all say:

"There are rarely suitable places for the carer to go, safe places where little is expected of them, that opens up the ability for them to recharge enough to keep going.

And it directly benefits the disabled person by ensuring their carer gets an adequate break and at the same time receives tools that helps them to perform at their best."

If you know people who are also desperate for this period of planned respite care for themselves, please do get in touch.

Full details will be arriving on my website and in other socials over the next few days.
