Today is World Architecture Day, an opportunity to acknowledge the architects shaping the homes, buildings and communities of New Zealand.

This year’s theme, ‘Housing is a Human Right. Build It.’, brings attention to the role architecture and the wider building industry can play in responding to housing challenges around the world.

At JSC, we believe good buildings start with considered, fit-for-purpose material choices that respond to the needs of the people who use them, the environment they sit within and the performance required of them over time.

We’re fortunate to work closely with architects across New Zealand, from early material and specification conversations through to seeing projects come to life on site.

Today, we simply want to acknowledge the thinking, care and expertise behind that work, and celebrate the people helping shape the places we live.

Happy World Architecture Day to all the wonderful Architects out there!

High above Muriwai Beach, one bay window is angled differently from every other opening in the house. It points towards the owner’s family home on the opposite coast. The house cannot be seen from here. That was never the point.

Designed by Architecture27 and built by Best Nest Building Company, the home carries that connection through its material palette. JSC's Rustic Cedar runs from the timber rainscreen to the ceilings, soffits and sliding screens, its light tone and visible knots give a nostalgic nod to the Douglas fir of the family home in Leigh.

This FSC® Forest Week, we’re supporting the call to “Do one thing for forests.”

For architects, designers and builders, that one thing can begin with the materials specified for a project.

Responsible timber sourcing matters. FSC® certification provides greater assurance around where timber has come from and how the forests behind it are managed.

At JSC, understanding the source of the timber we supply is an important part of how we approach material selection. FSC-certified options, including JSC TMT® Amba, form part of that wider commitment to responsible sourcing. Because the impact of a timber specification reaches beyond the finished building. It can help support better forest management, biodiversity, and the communities connected to those forests.

One material choice can carry much further.

A little throwback to a project we were involved in a couple years ago. This pavilion-style, riverside home is elevated with western red cedar cladding which combines vertical shiplap and rusticated cladding applications across its facade. A perfect example of premium living, expansive vitex decking that surrounds the pool - creating a generous outdoor entertaining area positioned to enjoy uninterrupted river views throughout the day.

JSC TMT Taiga cladding was chosen for this project in a TMT51 profile. Finished in JSC Coda Caliaby, the finish is a light and contemporary and retains the character of Taiga's distinctive butterfly knots across the facades gabled forms.

A private retreat in TMT Taiga

Created as a dedicated place to switch off, this compact sauna and cold plunge area brings a complete hot-and-cold experience into the home. A dark exterior opens to a warm, timber-lined interior, complete with a wood-fired heater, tiered seating and integrated lighting.

JSC TMT Taiga in a TMT84 profile lines the walls and ceiling. Its natural butterfly knots and varied grain give the space a relaxed character, while the horizontal boards create a cohesive finish throughout.

Love the contrast between the landscaping and cladding on this build with brushed TMT Taiga coated in JSC Scumble Nightfall.

Aro Recessed Windows.
One system, two ways to finish the reveal.
Which would you spec: aluminium or timber? Tell us below.

Aro® is here.

Recessed joinery has become a defining feature of contemporary architecture, and one that is increasingly specified. Aro recesses aluminium window and door joinery back to the framing line, so it sits flush with the framing rather than proud of the cladding. The result is a deeper, more deliberate shadow line, and a shorter aluminium heat-loss path around the opening.

Recessed windows are becoming more common. H1 insulation requirements have tightened, and rating tools like Green Star and Homestar bring more scrutiny to junction and reveal detailing. Aro gives you a more considered reveal than a standard proud-set window, resolved in the detail rather than on site.

Designed for the JSC VertiClad and JSC RustiClad systems, with a timber or aluminium jamb option. Visit our website to read more about Aro.
