A stripped back and honest offering... It feels like parting ways with a piece of my heart, in sharing her with you -- she began as a poem, written as an anniversary gift for my boyfriend in 2016 (nine years ago today)

Two years ago, I sat at my great-grandmother’s pianola during the break up of our seven year relationship and the verse melody landed on the tip of my fingers, teeth and tongue.

She’s a reminder of what it is to feel most human and that pain can create beauty, but really; to love, is to lose.

This video was taken in one shot, by two of my closest friends, Pippa Haslam & Peter Furlong. They asked me to dance for them, so I did !

Artwork by Peter Furlong and Pippa Haslam features the artist’s old flower truck in NZ. The vehicle is central to the world of Babylon, being the birthplace of the melody and appearing in the song via. lyric and field recording.

Music video directed and filmed by Peter Furlong featuring Izzy Woods, shot in East London captures the sensation of being swept up into the passage of time. The existentialism and retrospection we practise as humans as we run toward our future while simultaneously looking back at the past.

After the release of NZ On Air backed single Fallin’ for You in 2021, ives. spent the succeeding years caring full-time for her Mum with Multiple Sclerosis. Babylon came to fruition in the period following her Mum’s move into a permanent care facility. An agonising experience for the then 26 year old who turned to writing music as cathartic release throughout the turbulence and uncertainty. The sharpest tool in her emotional care kit and key to her resilience.
