During our cultural day last week, the tamariki explored sepak takraw, a traditional Filipino sport, using a light plastic ball to practise gentle kicking, passing, and simple footwork. Children this age enjoyed the challenge of keeping the ball moving, working together, and trying new ways to use their bodies.

Through this playful experience, they strengthened their coordination, teamwork, and growing confidence in physical games. They also showed curiosity as they learned about a fun part of Filipino culture.

It was a great pleasure to share and celebrate different cultures here at Learning Steps today! What a day of vibrant and rich cultural heritages. From kaiakos to whanau and to the tamariki, we were able to experience a strong sense of belonging where we are all respected and accepted no matter what part of the world we came from, but today we stand as one unit.

We have been very busy this week celebrating Samoan language week. We have learnt knew songs in the Samoan language, listened to Samoan myths and legends, coloured in the Samoan flag, made Samoan panakeke (pancakes), made hibiscus flowers, tapa cloth and coconut trees during art and craft time, and today we dressed in Samoan cultural clothes or red and blue. Through these experiences the languages and symbols of children’s own and other cultures are promoted and protected while the children becoming increasingly capable of making connections between people, places and things in their world and gain a sense of belonging
