Subject: Don't Buy Fireworks.
To: Letters to the Editor - The New Zealand Herald

Banning fireworks may be a fast way to stop the use of fireworks. But how will it be inforced? Who will do it? Will it be a criminal conviction? Will the cost of collecting fines be worth it?

The cost to write and pass a law through Parliament will be considerable. Will any political party want to lose voters support if such a law was introduced. My educated bet is that they wont.

And it's why they haven't done it already. Its why governments and politicians have dragged the chain and avoided banning private use of fireworks. Business and individuals who want to celebrate with fireworks would not vote for what ever political party or whoever indicates they will ban fireworks.

But they could put a substantial tax on the fireworks because of the social harm and the costs to our governmentv services from injuries., ACC claims, fire brigade services. Its a new tax that very few people would object to.

There is also is a simple solution to the misery caused by fireworks.

Don't buy fireworks. Don't shop at shops that sell fireworks. If you really care for animals then simply avoid supporting those who sell or hold fireworks gatherings to celebrate events where fireworks are let off.

Social pressure is more powerful than laws.
And it's far cheaper and effective. Look at the decline of adult smoking. It worked.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It's a good time to check in on the older people in our lives.

Many forms of abuse are subtle, seem acceptable or are done “for the person’s own good”. Abusers are often close to the older person, and trusted.

If you're concerned about someone, or just want to talk about something that worries you, call the Elder Abuse Response Service: 0800 32 668 65.

NZ Civil Defence are testing the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system on Sunday 14 June, between 6-7pm ⚠️📲

If you have a hidden second phone for your safety, we recommend turning it off or putting it in flight mode for the duration of the test (6-7pm on Sunday 14 June) to ensure it’s not discovered when the nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert is sent.

Some mobile devices set to silent mode will still emit a sound when the Emergency Mobile Alert test is sent, so switching to flight mode or turning off your device is the only way to avoid the loud sound of the alert.

You can find more information about the Emergency Mobile Alert system, including a factsheet and list of FAQs at 🚨 https://getready.govt.nz/en/prepared/ema

💬 HOW AN EMA IS SENT 💬

In advance of the EMA test on 14 June between 6-7pm, we wanted to answer some of your questions about how they work.

🛜 Cell towers broadcast an EMA to any device that connects to it, versus sending messages to individual phones, like a text message.

📍 This means a specific area of the country can be targeted, and an alert can be sent to people whenever they enter that specific area.

🚨 This is why some people can receive multiple alerts. If someone is traveling and moves from one cell tower to another, or someone's phone loses mobile signal and reconnects to a tower or bounces between two towers, an alert will be sent every time a new connection to a tower is made.

📱 This method of sending alerts is also why people can't opt out of EMAs. Nobody's personal information is needed to send an EMA, so there is no database to be removed from.
