Tonight is a full moon which is a great monthly reminder to check your own skin. Start by checking your entire body, including skin not normally exposed to the sun. You could ask for help from someone else to check difficult-to-see areas, such as your back, neck, and scalp.

Schools across the country are invited to join Melanoma New Zealand's annual awareness week in Term 3 this year.

Share or tag a teacher, student or school parent and help us spread the word.
We have some exciting activities planned to help support students and staff to learn about the importance of taking care of their skin when enjoying the outdoors.

New Zealand has the highest rate of melanoma in the world. This life-threatening cancer is most often caused by exposure to the sun, and a history of sunburn in childhood can lead to melanoma later in life. Melanoma is almost always preventable, and it is really important that our young people develop good sun smart habits from an early age.

Schools can join in the fun and “Get Spotted”, through non-uniform days, bake sales, scavenger hunts, quizzes, and other initiatives designed to get us talking about our skin, and how to stay safe in the sun. Schools' Get Spotted initiatives are profiled through our social channels and one lucky school is in to win a grand prize (stay tuned for more details about this!).

We would really love as many schools as possible to get involved in Melanoma New Zealand's annual awareness week. (And we hope to see even more secondary schools register this year, as the date has been brought forward into Term 3).

When the UV index is 3 or above, you need to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide to protect your skin from the sun.

Download a UV app on your phone to make checking the current UV level easy – it will also tell you what the maximum UV level will be for the day.
