Why is Plastic Free July something we give attention to each year? Firstly, over 100 million people participate in this global movement. It's got momentum and is an opportunity to inspire small changes which are sustainable. Reducing our plastic consumption is more important now than ever; with over 5 trillion microplastics already in our ocean. This is affecting all ocean life including New Zealand's marine mammals. In 2021, Massey University found traces of microplastics in all common dolphins examined post-mortem during 2019 and 2020. Plastic Free July isn't about trying to eliminate all plastic from your life, it's about making sustainable change that can be carried on for the rest of the year. Maybe it’s finally using those reusable bags stashed in a drawer. Saying no to single-use coffee cups. Swapping cling film for beeswax wraps. Small actions matter. Microplastic problem is a big issue nowadays. That’s why I wanted to become a microplastics researcher and focus on this problem specifically. I was the first person to do that in Kazakhstan and I published my paper in Marine Pollution Bulletin. When I first started I was so overwhelmed with the information and how BIG this problem is. However, I believe we still have time and power to change everything❤️ With this video I don’t want to discourage you but to motivate you to KEEP FIGHTING!!! From the northern waters of Alaska to the world's most remote islands in the South Pacific, we've seen plastic in the sea and on the beaches. It is one thing to read articles about the plastic problem, and quite another to witness the heartbreaking reality of fluffy juvenile (endangered) sea birds nesting in plastic rubbish on an island that few people will ever visit. In keeping with our mission statement, we are absolutely committed to minimizing the use of plastic aboard Ardea. We admit, it's not always easy. We simply must do everything we can to reduce our reliance on single-use plastic. All of us, together. Please consider making some changes in your lifestyle today.
