⚠️ Grevillea robusta (Silky Oak) – Not as harmless as it looks! ⚠️
Many people don't realise that Grevillea robusta can cause serious skin irritation in some individuals.
The leaves, flowers, bark, and fresh timber contain a chemical called grevillol, which is very similar to the irritant found in poison ivy. Contact with the foliage, sap, sawdust, or freshly cut wood can cause an itchy, red, blistering rash. Symptoms are often delayed and may not appear for 24–72 hours after exposure.
This is one of the reasons Grevillea robusta is sometimes referred to as "Australia's Poison Ivy."
When pruning or removing these trees, it is recommended to wear gloves, long sleeves, eye protection, and avoid direct contact with fresh sawdust and sap.
The flower buds, seed pods, and young shoots also contain compounds capable of releasing small amounts of cyanide and should never be eaten.
If you have a Grevillea robusta on your property and require pruning or removal, ensure appropriate safety precautions are taken or contact your local qualified arborist.

⚠️ OLEANDER WARNING – ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S MOST TOXIC PLANTS ⚠️
Oleander, botanical name Nerium oleander, is an extremely poisonous ornamental plant commonly found throughout Auckland gardens, roadsides, lifestyle blocks, and older properties. Despite its attractive pink, white, red, or yellow flowers, every part of this plant is toxic — including the leaves, flowers, stems, sap, roots, and even smoke from burning it.
Many people are unaware how dangerous oleander can be to both humans and animals. The plant contains powerful cardiac toxins known as cardiac glycosides, including oleandrin, which can affect the heart and nervous system. Even small amounts ingested can cause serious illness or death.
Symptoms of poisoning may include:
• Nausea and vomiting
• Stomach pain
• Dizziness
• Irregular heartbeat
• Collapse or seizures
• Severe poisoning can be fatal
The sap can also irritate skin and eyes when handling or cutting the plant.
Oleander is particularly dangerous for:
• Children
• Dogs and cats
• Horses, sheep, cattle, goats, and other livestock
Auckland has many mature oleander hedges and ornamental plantings scattered throughout residential areas, parks, and roadside gardens, meaning exposure risk is more common than many realise.
If removing or pruning oleander:
✔ Wear gloves and eye protection
✔ Avoid breathing dust or smoke
✔ Never burn clippings
✔ Keep all debris away from animals and children
✔ Wash hands and tools thoroughly afterward
If poisoning is suspected, contact the NZ National Poisons Centre immediately on 0800 POISON (0800 764 766).

A lot of people grow these because they look beautiful, but many do not realise how dangerous they can be.
