Kia ora koutou
It's been a very enriching and rewarding experience working with the wonderful group of acting students for this 10-week term.
This has been our first intake of students that I've worked with in acting for camera and stage outside of the traditional, formal institutions of education such as MIT and SSFTV where I have taught in the past.
It has been great to work alongside Whau Local Board / Arts Whau who have been central in getting this service up and running by supporting us, In Session Productions, and our vision to provide a very accessible acting course to the community.
One of the highlights of the whole course was seeing and being part of the students final performances to a live audience. The rehearsals, pre-production and final performance was a real privilege to be a part of.
But my biggest takeaway from the whole experience was the enjoyment of every class. Watching and experiencing the creativity from each student singularly and collectively was great and in and of itself a complete reward.
I think this echoes the feelings of all of those who took part in the classes when I say, it's sad that we have come to an end.
However, I look forward to working with each of our team in the future and hope to be able, with Arts Whau's blessing, to offer further tuition in the future.
Below are some photos of our students' performance night :)

"Love the art in yourself and not yourself in the art.”
- Konstatin Staislavski
I remember getting my first lead in a theatre show and experiencing for the first time, the weight and responsibility that came with it. Up until then I had played minor roles either supporting the principal actors with props in hand or occasionally getting a ‘walk on’ line. I even played ‘the third tree from the right’. But no matter what the role, even if the lines were small, feeling the audience’s eyes upon you and knowing that the fate of the show rested in my hands for that small passing of time, was for me quite intense ......

In my experience of acting, from a director's perspective and an actor's, finding the truth of a character in a scene and also finding the truth of the scene and making them work together as a coherent piece is quite an achievement. At times this can take forever and at other times the two come together in moments. Putting all of these scenes together to create complete, seamless and believable work; film or theatre, is a triumph for all involved.
In order for an actor to find the truth of the character and scene, that is to say, to be true to the character and scene, the actor must first be true to themselves. There can be no hiding of one's self. An actor must be prepared to be open and stay open.
Bradley Whitford puts it like this,
"When you act, you’re always playing a version of yourself. You can’t bring more to the role than what you are.”
For example, if you're emotionally closed as a person it will be near impossible for you to deliver an emotional performance that is 'believable.'
I also like this quote from the same actor which at first read seems to contradict the first one. But I believe the two thoughts work well together. - "You need to be real enough to be believable, but you don't necessarily have to be real enough to be real. There is a distinction.”
It's important to remember that we are actors playing the roles of others. If not then only doctors could play doctors and so on and so forth. But in the realm of emotions and the stuff of being human, all actors need to work with honesty and openness which will ultimately lead them to finding the truth of both the character and scene.

I love this quote from Robert De Niro, "If you're an actor, always be true to your character. If you are not an actor, have character and always be true to yourself."
