Musician Geneva AM joined Select Specialist Georgina Brett at our Mount Eden Gallery to discuss some highlights in the Select online art auction catalogue.
Their kōrero included Fiona Pardington’s A69170 (2019). Pardington’s photography isolates taonga, native birds and cultural objects against dark backgrounds, drawing out texture and presence while examining histories of ecological loss, colonial collecting and cultural memory. Likewise, they discussed the impressive works of Julian Dashper and Emily Karaka.

Geneva Alexander-Marsters AM brings a sensibility well attuned to Select’s catalogue, which features a strong presence of Māori artists.

This work by Emily Karaka ‘Iwi Representation’ is in our current online art auction, Select, which brings together a remarkable cross-section of Māori artistic practice, spanning generations and disciplines.

The striking painting is dense with political urgency and visual complexity, characteristic of an artist whose bold, narrative-driven canvases have long been central to the articulation of mana wāhine in contemporary Māori art.

This edition of Select features a strong Māori presence across generations: Hiria Anderson-Mita, Sandy Adsett, Shane Cotton, Star Gossage, Aroha Gossage, Ralph Hotere, Emily Karaka, Fiona Pardington, Reuben Paterson, Peter Robinson, and Robin White. The catalogue also includes an early oil painting by the late Philip Trusttum, conceptual works from the Estate of L. Budd, and pieces by American artist Terry Fox, a key figure in West Coast conceptual art of the late 1960s and early 70s, among many others.

Select is Webb’s curated online art auction, presenting hand-picked, collectable works by emerging, topical, and established artists from Aotearoa and beyond. Each catalogue is assembled by Webb’s art specialists and showcased in both Wellington and Auckland galleries, offering collectors a considered point of entry into significant New Zealand and international art.

The Estate is approaching its last few hours of bidding, with a collection that moves between disciplined design and more relaxed, expressive forms.

Highlights include Mackintosh’s high-backed silhouettes which sit in contrast to the soft geometry of modern Italian seating, while ceramics (by the likes of Alvino Bagni, Graeme Storm and John Parker), glass, and smaller decorative pieces introduce moments of texture and spontaneity.

Design icons are represented across the sale, including Cassina, Minotti and Tom Dixon, and this reflects a balance between architectural clarity and lived-in character, design history and the pleasure of well-made everyday objects.

Browse the catalogue online and in-person. Place your bids before the auction closes tonight.
