We're joining the Big Shout Out this June to recognise and celebrate the volunteers who power our community.
Today we celebrate the volunteers at Mid Canterbury Rural Driver Licensing Scheme!
For the past 9 years, this programme has assisted migrants and newcomers to rural Mid Canterbury to gain a New Zealand driver's license. Most of the people assisted by the programme are women who are isolated on rural properties and the benefits of getting a driver license are lifechanging.
Volunteers are right at the heart of the Mid Canterbury Rural Driver Licensing Scheme - transporting participants to road code classes, assisting with childcare during lessons, and as driver mentors. This community kindness is now being repaid as six of the current volunteers were previous participants in the programme.
Thank you to every one of our Mid Canterbury Rural Driver Licensing Scheme volunteers for your dedication and commitment to ensuring we have safe and confident new drivers on our roads and a community enriched by cultural diversity.
You can support initiatives like this in our local community with a donation to Advance Ashburton Community Foundation. Message us today to find out more or call 307 5902.

Looking to get a learners license or to convert your overseas license?
Registrations are open for our next road code course. To be eligible you must NOT have a NZ license or have started the conversion process of your overseas license.
We are looking for adults living outside of Ashburton town who can commit to attending our fantastic 9 week road code course. You'll get a good understanding of the road rules, meet new friends and be taught to drive by our amazing mentors.
Message, email or call Wendy on 0276113301, [email protected]

If youβre getting ready to travel and your windscreen is foggy, hereβs the fastest way to clear it:
β’ Turn your demister on.
β’ Turn your air conditioning to full strength at its hottest temperature.
β’ Turn circulating air off.
β’ Open the windows by a few centimetres, even if only for 20β30 seconds.
You should turn circulating air off because cold air from outside will clear fog faster than recirculated air in your car, which is already hot and has already absorbed some condensation.
In other words, cold and dry air is better than warm and moist air.
The circulating air symbol looks like a car with a U-shaped arrow in it β turn it off.
Opening the windows just a little will help clear the humid air inside, replacing it with colder air from outside. This speeds up the process a bit but it's a nice-to-have β sometimes it'll be raining, or just really cold outside.
If youβre not sure what your demister looks like, its symbol looks like three arrows pointing up at a curved rectangle. In most modern vehicles this symbol will be on a button you can turn on or off, but in older vehicles it may be a setting you need to select using a dial.
We've all seen people driving around with a foggy windscreen, and with foggy windows too. It's illegal to drive with a foggy windscreen (under section 8.8 of the Land Transport (Road User) Rule), so clear your windscreen and keep it clear as youβre travelling.
When the weather is bad, always check our pages to see if state highways are affected before you travel. Follow us if you arenβt already. You can find more information in this post: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1HJqwn4Sxa/
