Scam warning ahead ….

We have been seeing an increase in telephone based scams impacting people and businesses around the district that you need to be wary of.

The way this plays out is you receive a phone call from a ‘kiwi’ sounding person, so straight away people’s guard is down as the person isn’t a foreigner. They claim to be from the bank and get you to visit a website to download their software.

Once connected they can see you screen and convince you they are from the bank by telling you the last transaction, but they do this by viewing your screens or looking at your systems in the background after you have let them onto your pc.

They proceed to try to take money out of your account, or delete files, or any combination of things.

We have seen this a couple of times in the past week around Ashburton.
It doesn’t start with a dodgy email, but with an innocent seeming phone call.

Remember- your bank will NEVER ring you and want to access your computer.

If in any doubt or you receive these calls hang up immediately on the person and don’t let them into your computer, if you have let
Them onto your computer, notify your bank immediately and have your computer checked out by your trusted IT provider to make sure it’s clean.

We have an important message.

Recently there have been a few business email compromises happen in Ashburton, this is when you’re tricked into supplying your username and password to a hacker that then gains full access to your email account, cloud storage and more.

Here are a few things to remember.

1. Businesses / people will usually send you an attached file, not a link to a file on their server / cloud storage.

2. If you have to put in YOUR username and password when you click a link that’s a red flag. Stop what you’re doing and delete the email.

3. Don’t open unsolicited or strange emails even if it’s from someone you know.
These messages are coming in showing they might be quotes or invoices but will be in a different format to how you usually receive them.

4. If in doubt, call the person who sent the email to confirm.

If you think you’ve been compromised, reach out to your IT support, of course we are happy to help if required

Scary isn’t it?

Probably 3-4 minutes in a presentation environment this Microsoft account was compromised from a link that would normally be received in a phishing style email.
Username, password and more importantly the MFA approved session was stolen.

Result was the threat actor could them instantly access your account without needing your MFA code again!
