Well... we may have underestimated just how many people are interested in dead bodies! 😄

A massive thank you to everyone who came along to today's event at Whangaparāoa Library. We were expecting a few curious faces, but instead an incredible 55 people packed the room to hear Tom share stories from over 36 years in forensic science.

In fact, there were so many people that some had to spill out into the library foyer! Thankfully no crime scene tape was required to cordon the area off. 😉

A huge thank you to Chloe Burchall for organising such a fantastic event and making it all happen.

Im still trying to take it all in. We did it!

I woke up this morning to discover that The Dead Speak: My Life in Forensics has been voted #70 in the Whitcoulls Top 100 Books of 2026. Something I would never have dreamed of. To be included alongside so many incredible New Zealand and International authors is both an honour and incredibly humbling.

This huge achievement wouldn't have been possible without the support of so many people.

When I began writing The Dead Speak, it was just on a whim, a bucket list item maybe, I never expected to experience any of these achievements. It was written simply to give readers an honest insight into the world of forensic science and the experiences that have shaped my career. Knowing that the book has connected with so many people is incredibly rewarding.

What a special weekend at the Taranaki WinterFest 2026.
Speaking to a sold-out audience about a book I once only dreamed of writing was both humbling and emotional. As a new writer, I hoped my story would connect with people, but I never quite imagined moments like this.
A particular highlight was meeting Witi Ihimaera, whose contribution to New Zealand literature has inspired so many.

We're back in the office this week after three fantastic days in Whangārei delivering our Mobile Forensic Science Workshops!

We had the pleasure of visiting three incredible schools with highly engaged and enthusiastic students across Years 7–13:

**Day 1:Excellere College
**Day 2:Tikipunga High School
**Day 3:Huanui College

Students stepped into the world of forensic science by investigating a mock crime scene and taking part in hands-on workshops, including fingerprint development using forensic powders, DNA sampling techniques, and an introduction to DNA analysis.

A huge thank you to the staff and students for their enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to get involved. It's always inspiring to see the next generation of scientists, investigators, and critical thinkers in action!
