ForestAction Nepal's continuous engagement in invasive species

Realising the threat posed by invasive alien species of plants and animals in our ecosystems and people’s wellbeing, ForestAction Nepal is undertaking participatory action research (PAR) on various dimensions of invasive species management. Our decade-long engagement on Invasive species includes knowledge generation, capacity building, field-level experiments, control campaigns, and awareness raising and sensitisation.

Back in 2020, our researchers reported Mimosa diplotricha, an obnoxious w**d from eastern Nepal, and subsequently assessed its socio-ecological impacts, mapped its spatial distribution, organised removal campaigns, demonstrated good methods of controlling at the local level, and prepared communication materials to sensitise different stakeholders. These activities on Mimosa diplotricha were supported by Darwin Initiative projects under the Biodiversity Challenge Funds, UK. Some of the output related to M. diplotricha can be found here.

Recently, our researchers have spotted an invasive species in a new locality in southern Nepal, which is otherwise known only from a small locality. The species, Sphagneticola trilobata, reported from the Paanchkhal area of Kabhre in 2021, has now been spotted in Southern Nepal, Makawanpur. The species is one among the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world.

Upon noticing the species, we interacted with locals and discussed potential management options. Our researchers have traced its introduction pathways. It appears that the species was brought to Harnamadi area of Makwanpur from Calcutta, India, five years ago. Noting its occurrence in the landscape, our researchers have communicated this observation to concerned authorities and experts for rapid action.

New Blog

The blog “Climate Finance Dilemma in Nepal: A System Without Practice” highlights the gap between Nepal’s climate finance policies and their implementation on the ground. While the country has established various frameworks, strategies, and institutional mechanisms to mobilize and manage climate finance, the article argues that limited institutional capacity, weak coordination, inadequate transparency, and challenges in accessing funds have hindered effective delivery of resources to vulnerable communities. The blog emphasizes the need to move beyond policy commitments and strengthen practical systems, accountability mechanisms, and local-level capacities to ensure that climate finance reaches those most affected by climate change.

Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.

World Environment Day 2026 sheds light on the reality of today's world, where climate change is reshaping the lives of people, ecosystems, and livelihoods.

Forests, wetlands, and biodiversity are some of the most effective areas for combating climate change and protecting our ecosystems.

It is high time for collective action to protect our environment and build a resilient future for us and the generations to come.

Together, let's turn our actions towards a healthier planet!

Training on Entrepreneurship Development, Management, Record-Keeping, and Financial Literacy

Under the CaFIN Project (funded by IDRC / CRDI through Climate Policy Initiative ), entrepreneurship development, management, record-keeping, and financial literacy trainings were successfully conducted for agriculture and forest-based entrepreneur networks in Sindhupalchok and Nawalpur districts.
A total of 59 entrepreneurs, primarily women, participated in three-day training sessions held between 18–28 May 2026. The training enhanced participants' knowledge and skills in enterprise planning and management, financial literacy, record-keeping, access to financial services, and regulatory procedures.
Through interactive discussions, practical exercises, games, and experience sharing, participants explored solutions to common business challenges, developed business plans, and strengthened their capacity to sustainably manage and grow their enterprises.

Localized degradation persists!

Over the last six decades, adopting both strict protectionist and participatory policies, Nepal has demonstrated a substantial progress in increasing forest cover and tree density. Despite these progress, various forms of localized degradation persist in forests, wetlands and rangelands. Recently our researchers organized Rapid Ecological Appraisal to explore various forms of land degradation and response to degradation in eastern Nepal. Among others, we focused on understanding how land degradation caused by increasing dry spells and as well as by erosions affects well-being of rural people. This exploratory study is part of REDAA program supported research undertaken by ForestAction Nepal in collaboration with Nepal Foresters' Association (NFA) and Federation of Community Forest Users Nepal (FECOFUN). ForestAction Nepal led REDAA project aims to improve restoration outcomes through knowledge, capacity and dialogue.

Acknowledging the role of local actions in achieving global biodiversity goals, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is celebrating this year's international biodiversity day with the theme "Acting locally for global impacts." ForestAction Nepal is delighted to mark the International Day for Biodiversity, 22 May 2026.

While we work to restore degraded lands, manage forests and conserve biodiversity in different parts of Nepal, Jalthal forest has remained one of our prominent sites for local actions. The support from Biodiversity Challenge Funds (BCF) UK for our engagement in Jalthal has demonstrated results on the ground with lasting impacts. We successfully established innovative methods to manage invasive species, developed models of integrating conservation and income generation of forest dependent marginalized people, identified and conserved rare and threatened trees. We also supported the capacity enhancement of the local community and conducted comprehensive biodiversity assessment engaging members of local communities.

Our work clearly demonstrates that biodiversity conservation in community managed forests can contribute to achieve broader biodiversity goals. On this occasion, resonating with the theme of the day, we are pleased to share some of our major publications featuring our local actions. Under the BAGAR (Building Agroforestry-based Adaptation Plans for Resilient Floodplains) Project being implemented by ForestAction Nepal in partnership with Heifer International Nepal and The Small Earth Nepal (SEN), conducted Municipal-Level Agroforestry Plan Validation Workshops in Marin Rural Municipality, Sindhuli and Gadhimai Municipality, Rautahat from 3–6 May 2026 📅.

The workshops brought together members of municipal Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Forums to review and validate agroforestry plans for floodplain restoration and climate resilience.

Discussions focused on agroforestry priorities, riverbank stabilisation, erosion control, ecosystem restoration, enterprise development and climate-resilient livelihood opportunities. By integrating scientific planning with community-based solutions, the BAGAR Project aims to reduce flood risks, restore degraded floodplains and strengthen livelihoods though food and fodder security in Nepal’s Bagmati River Basin.
