Sergeant Matt Tonroe

Sergeant Matt Tonroe, originally from Manchester, served with the British Army after enlisting in 2004. Following initial training, he joined the 3rd Battalion of The Parachute Regiment in Colchester. Over the course of his career, he undertook multiple operational deployments, including missions in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Colleagues described him as a highly skilled soldier whose professionalism and composure earned broad respect within his unit.

On 29 March 2018, Sergeant Tonroe was killed during coalition operations in northern Syria. He was operating alongside United States forces near Manbij when an explosion occurred. Official statements at the time indicated that the incident involved an improvised explosive device. A US service member, Master Sergeant Jonathan J. Dunbar, was also killed, and several others were reported wounded.

Beyond operational duties, Tonroe was known for mentoring fellow soldiers and contributing to specialist training roles. Those who served with him recalled his steady leadership and commitment to duty. He is survived by his family and is remembered for his years of service and dedication.
