Inside India’s First All-Female Kayaking Revolution | In April 2023, eight women launched their kayaks into the icy waters of the Himalayan Ganga River. Led by India’s top female kayaker, Naina Adhikari, it was the first all-female kayaking expedition of the river. Over three nights and countless rapids, a movement was born: Ganga Girls.

Three years prior, I received an Instagram message from Adhikari. I knew of her as “that kayaker girl from India,” but we had never met. She had responded to a post I made about sexism in the whitewater industry, saying it resonated deeply.

While I’d faced inequality—being paid half as much as male champions at freestyle competitions—Adhikari’s experiences were far more harrowing. “In India, if I’m on an expedition, I have to worry if anybody is going to misbehave with me because they’re drunk… I have to worry if there is a man who is trying to hit me because he’s frustrated from a raft trip.”

Until speaking with Adhikari, I didn’t realize how privileged I was to have a full women’s class to compete with. Or how lucky I was to kayak with women and to feel safe with my male kayaking partners. I decided I wanted to meet her and learn her story.

An Incomplete Guide To Stereotyping Canoeists | Subspecies: Backpackis familiaris

Vernacular: “Pack rat”

Defining feature: Carries food in canvas backpacks waterproofed with black garbage bags. Slowly evolving toward use of waterproof nylon packs.

Markings: Brightly-colored tie-dyed shirt advertising rock and roll band that broke up before she was born. Often displays a wet posterior from the insidious dripping of invariably wet packs.

Behavior: Travels in large groups in slowly leaking Grummans. Struggles on longer portages as thin leather pack straps cause painful bisection of collarbone from shoulder blade. Protects food from wildlife by constructing elaborate systems to suspend packs from overhanging trees, but only for the first night.

Life span: Short. Ends soon after parents stop paying for camp.

Raft Nepal – Rivers from the Abode of the Gods...
Adrift Adventures -Best of Himalayan Adventure Travel .
From the towering peaks of the High Himalaya and the mystical lands of Tibet and Bhutan, rivers are born—rivers that tumble, twist, and dance in the classic whitewater pool-drop style. They thunder through narrow canyons, wind through serene valleys, pass terraced farmlands and remote hamlets clinging to sunny slopes, and eventually spill out onto the Indian plains, merging with the vast, muddy waters of the Ganges.

These rivers are the lifeblood of the wilderness—untouched, untamed, and unforgettable.

Why is Himalayan Whitewater Among the Best in the World?

It’s no mystery. Here we are, in the shadow of the mightiest mountain range on Earth. Few adventures compare to the thrill of running wild Himalayan rivers, fed by glacial snowmelt and monsoon rains.

In September, October, and November, high flows from the monsoon create a prime whitewater season. Again, in April, May, and early June, pre-monsoon snowmelt from the Himalayan giants offers a second season of spectacular rafting and kayaking.

World-Class River Expeditions

The best Himalayan river journeys are not just about a day of adrenaline—they are entire expeditions:

Multi-day adventures covering 100–300 km of remote, dramatic waterways.

Short, action-packed trips for a two-day thrill.

Major expeditions lasting up to twelve days for those seeking the ultimate river challenge.

Whether you want a quick taste of adventure or an epic voyage through Nepal’s most remote river corridors, the Himalayas deliver experiences of world calibre.

The Living River

A raft’s crew is small—never more than eight—led by a skilled helmsman, a whitewater expert who reads the river like a book. With precise calls for paddle strokes, our once-inexperienced boatload of “landlubbers” quickly transforms into a coordinated team—an ability that soon proves essential.

Between rapids, you might lean back, adjust your seat for comfort, feel the cool breeze, and watch Nepal’s wilderness drift by under the perfect touch of shade.

Then—a deep, muffled roar ahead shifts the mood. Life jackets tightened, helmets buckled, paddles ready: action stations. The raft surges forward into the churning heart of the rapids, wrestling for control with the river itself. We punch through standing waves, power across boiling holes, buck and lurch, and finally burst into calm water a few hundred yards downstream, grinning and exhilarated.

---

Legendary Himalayan Rivers

Karnali – 40 relentless rapids in the first four days, surrounded by untouched wilderness that feels as if it’s from the dawn of time.

Kali Gandaki – A journey through deep gorges and cascading waterfalls, ending with a spectacular set of photogenic rapids on the final morning.

Sun Koshi – An epic 8-day, self-sufficient expedition through Nepal’s eastern hills, swelling with tributaries into a world-class whitewater adventure “into the back of beyond.”

Bhote Koshi, Trishuli & Seti – Shorter 2–3 day trips, perfect for those short on time but still seeking thrilling rapids and pristine scenery.

---

River Grading – International Standard

Grade 0 – Flat water, no rapids, “barely a splash”

Grade I – Bubbling current, small roller-coaster waves

Grade II – Technical and exciting; trained guide required

Grade IV – Big, powerful rapids; exhilarating and unforgiving

Grade V – The hair-raising limit for expert paddlers only

Grade VI – Unrunnable; portage required—do not attempt

---

A Day on the River – The Pace of Adventure

A rafting day isn’t rushed. Morning tea and a hearty breakfast set the tone. By around 9:30 a.m., the gear is stowed and the day’s whitewater begins. Around 12:30 p.m., we break on a sandy beach for lunch before paddling on to the next stretch. By 4:00 p.m., camp is pitched—leaving time to relax, swim, explore, or simply enjoy the riverside sunset.
On a well-paced trip, expect 5½–6 hours of rafting each full day.
