On busy summit days, this section can become one of the slowest parts of the entire South Col route. Climbers moving toward the summit and those descending often share the same fixed lines, so progress depends on the conditions, the pace of the teams ahead, and the flow of people on the mountain.
By the time a climber reaches the Hillary Step, weeks of acclimatization, multiple rotations, and a long summit push are already behind them. The challenge at this stage is often not speed but patience, judgment, and managing energy at extreme altitude.
