🌍 Update
Sarah and Gabriela, from our non-profit have just returned from Zambia, and the visit left us more motivated than ever.
At Kapiri District Hospital and the surrounding rural clinics, we saw a wall covered with photos of babies alongside their names, birth weights, and survival stories. Seeing those stories gathered in one place was a powerful reminder of why early jaundice screening matters and of the lives already being impacted through this work.
Thanks to the dedication of the healthcare workers at Kapiri District Hospital and the continued collaboration with local clinics and communities, jaundice screening is becoming an integrated part of routine newborn care. Awareness is growing among families and healthcare workers alike that jaundice can be treated when detected early.
As the project continues to expand, we look forward to supporting even more healthcare workers and increasing access to early newborn screening across the district. Each child screened brings us one step closer to a future where no baby suffers the consequences of undetected jaundice and where every newborn has the opportunity to thrive.
✨ We are just getting started.

💡 In a recent post, we shared insights on what neonatal jaundice is and when it appears.
But awareness doesn’t stop there. Some babies need more than monitoring.
👉 Here are a few important things to know about screening, treatment, and why early detection matters:
🔸10% of jaundiced babies need treatment
🔸if left untreated, severe jaundice can lead to hearing loss, brain damage, and even death
🔸severe consequences of jaundice are preventable by early screening, timely detection and correct treatment
🔸phototherapy, which uses blue light to help break down bilirubin, is a treatment method for severe jaundice
📣 Raising awareness saves lives.

Neonatal jaundice is common—and knowing the basics can help protect newborns everywhere.
👉 Here are some key things that can help you better understand neonatal jaundice:
🔸 60%–80% of babies develop jaundice.
🔸 It’s caused by a buildup of bilirubin, a yellow substance that forms when red blood cells break down.
🔸 It usually appears 2 to 3 days after birth.
🔸 It’s characterized by yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
📣 Awareness is the first step.
This Jaundice Awareness Month, let’s spread knowledge and support better outcomes for newborns everywhere.

Jaundice, caused by elevated bilirubin levels, affects 60–80% of newborns globally. Every year, approximately 1.1 million newborns, mostly in low-resource settings, develop severe hyperbilirubinemia due to the lack of accessible jaundice screening solutions.
Today, we join the global community in celebrating the extraordinary dedication of midwives everywhere. Their work is essential in ensuring mothers and newborns receive the support they need from the very first day.
Established by the International Confederation of Midwives and supported by WHO and UNFPA, this day highlights the critical role midwives play in protecting maternal and newborn health.
At Picterus and Picterus Newborn Health, we are deeply grateful for the trust and collaboration of midwives. Our mission to give every newborn, in every setting the best start in life, through access to timely jaundice care
would not be possible without them. 💛
