Thirty two years ago, on my 10th birthday, I received a desk that my grandfather had built with his own hands. That desk has served not only me, but also both of my children throughout the years. After decades of daily use and wear, it eventually reached the point where no one else wanted it anymore.
But to me, it was never just a piece of furniture.
My grandfather meant the world to me. He played a huge role in my life and was the person I looked up to most. He was my greatest role model. I couldn’t bear the thought of throwing the desk away or hiding it in storage, so instead I chose to give it a new life and a new purpose.
After countless hours of sanding, priming, painting, and varnishing, I transformed it into something new while preserving the soul of what my grandfather created. I clad the drawer section with wooden slats, reused the old tabletop from the old kitchen table, and decorated it before applying layer upon layer of clear varnish for protection.
Now, this table will continue its journey as the heart of our kitchen, where it can live on for many more years in our home.
After 32 years, this has become a collaboration between my grandfather and me, a tribute to the man who will always remain my greatest inspiration. ❤️
