World Environment Day - June 5
Today is a good reminder that the choices we make, at work and at home, add up. Cleaner energy, less waste, smarter ways to produce food: small steps in the right direction.
We're proud to play our part in the water.
Happy World Environment Day from all of us at Smart Farm, and to everyone out there doing their part, big or small, for a healthier planet. Thank you. 🌍

Norway's feed revolution, and why mussels matter

Over 90% of raw materials for Norwegian salmon feed are imported. By 2034, a quarter of all feed must come from local, sustainable Norwegian sources.
Low-trophic species like blue mussels are one of the most promising answers.
Mussels grow by filtering the water, and in doing so, they actively clean the fjords. Researchers at the Havforskningsinstituttet Norway are already testing blue mussels as a protein source in salmon feed, with encouraging results. Marine scientist Belghit is exploring whether blue mussels can safely replace imported feed ingredients at scale.

But scaling mussel farming requires the right infrastructure.
For over 20 years, we've been developing automated mussel and low-trophic farming systems that are scalable, safe, and built for real sea conditions. Mermaid's Reaper harvests over 30 tonnes per hour with a single operator.
Scaling mussel farming to feed-industry volumes isn't a small-boat operation. It requires reliable systems, easy to operate, and designed to grow with demand.
Smart Farm's technology is built exactly for that. Continuous, low-maintenance production, at the scale the industry actually needs.

The Smart Farm system was designed specifically to reduce labor requirements and maximize safety out on the water. In this video, Magnus Petersen, Research and Development Director at Pronofa ASA, breaks down exactly how less maintenance translates to a much safer environment for the crew. Instead of dealing with unpredictable incidents and risky offshore trips, they’ve streamlined the entire workflow to make ocean farming both simpler and more secure.

Low-trophic species have always made sense on paper, requiring no feed, no chemicals, and a minimal footprint while delivering high nutritional value and natural water filtration. The barrier to scaling them has never been the biology itself, it has been the lack of infrastructure that makes large operations economically viable. Smart Farm's systems solve exactly that problem, proven across 20+ countries and some of the world's most demanding marine environments, reducing crew requirements and delivering consistent, repeatable harvests at a scale that simply wasn't achievable before.

Happy Syttende Mai!
May 17 marks Norway's Constitution Day, a national holiday celebrated since 1814.
We are a proud Norwegian company, and today reminds us of exactly that. Norway is where our story began, where our values were shaped, and where we developed the technology that today supports mussel farming operations in over 20 countries around the world. Being Norwegian is not just where we are from; it is part of who we are.
Gratulerer med dagen! 🎉

Meat and mussels rarely appear in the same conversation. But that may be changing.
The question being asked today is not whether mussels will replace meat, but whether future protein systems will look anything like the ones we have now. Companies are already entering the market with alternatives that would have seemed far-fetched a decade ago.
Mussels fit into this shift in a way that is hard to ignore. They require no feed, no land, and no significant intervention to grow. With Smart Farm, the cultivation and harvesting side becomes efficient and scalable, while the ocean continues to do most of the work.
Will mussel farming ever reach the cultural or commercial scale of traditional meat production? As global protein demand increases and food systems continue to evolve, marine-based proteins are becoming harder to overlook.

Smart Farm was built to scale low-trophic aquaculture operations, and Pronofa ASA is living proof. Behind their Purply product, made from tunicates, there is a farming operation that needs to grow efficiently and reliably. In this video, Magnus Petersen, Research and Development Director at Pronofa ASA, shares why Smart Farm became what he calls the missing link to scaling tunicate farming at a commercial level, and what that looks like in practice.

Mussels have been solving underwater engineering challenges for millions of years.
In 2025, scientists at Hokkaido University proved it. Using AI and machine learning, they developed the strongest underwater adhesive ever created, inspired by the proteins that allow mussels and barnacles to cling to wet surfaces in the ocean.
The result? A hydrogel so powerful it kept a rubber duck stuck to a seaside rock through tides and waves. The same technology could one day be used in surgery, marine infrastructure, and underwater repairs.
At Smart Farm, we've always believed that the ocean holds the answers. Mussels are not just a food source, they filter our waters, inspire cutting-edge science, and continue to surprise us.

Mussels are one of the most efficient natural filters on the planet, and at Smart Farm, we build technology that lets nature do that at scale.
It starts with the SmartUnit, installed once. The net design creates a vertical habitat across the water column, giving mussels the maximum surface area to settle and grow. From that point, nature takes over.
A single mussel filters water continuously — grazing on phytoplankton and consuming everything from microscopic organisms to sea lice larvae, harmful algae, and excess nitrogen and phosphorus.
When harvest time comes, the Mermaid Reaper or Neptune Reaper does the work — harvesting 30+ tonnes per hour, thinning the population and removing predators in the process.
And then? The net stays in place, clean and ready. Mussels begin settling again. The same system, a new cycle, continuous filtration.

Just the ocean doing what it does best - powered by Smart Farm technology.
