The seventh album by Norwegian rock pioneers Årabrot [...]could just as well never have happened.

Just before going on a three week UK tour, Årabrot mainman Kjetil Nernes discovered an unsettling itch in his throat. After a quick visit to the doctor, Nernes completed the tour with an alarming secret: Malignant cancer.

The album you have in front of you is a collection of the music and lyrics written while undergoing surgery, treament and recovery. In Nernes' own words:

"The theme of the Gospel is a vision of the lonely warrior on a summit looking out over a battle field, the smoke from the bomb craters, an all-encompassing silence. The war was against one self; against the ugliness, against the sickness. You sink to the bottom of the sea. All of a sudden you are back on the surface again, stupefied. And hungry! A wicked hunger for everything human life has to offer: S*x! War! Drugs! You breathe, but but not like before. "The man who has been in hell, never forget""

The new album “The Gospel” is recorded partly at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio and partly in the old church in the woods of Dalarna, Sweden where Nernes lives and runs his studio these days. Årabrot has had a revolving crew of contributors the last 4 years. This time the band has been reinforced with among others, Ted Parsons (Killing Joke, Swans, Prong) on drums, Andrew Liles (Current 93/Nurse With Wound) and Stephen O’Malley (SunnO))/KTL). Kvelertak singer Erlend Hjelvik also appears with norse guestvocals on track 5 "Ah Feel". As usual, the artwork is signed by norwegian artist Johannes Høie.

"Årabrot is an animal on a perpetual alterative hunt." Nernes explains "Always sniffing around for new blood. Everything came together quite nicely this time. Musical contributors from an international top-team! The collective effect of the different contributors makes the final result vital. It grinds, it sparks. Like a five- or six-headed monster. Everyone bringing in their own world, their own egos, their own thing. All parts develop and finesse the specific Årabrot sound, the animal called Årabrot."

From the ashes of the iconic Bodø-hardcore band The Spectacle, Kollwitz arose and quickly became one of the defining post-metal bands of their era. As with Cult of Luna, you can be forgiven for drawing comparisons to the northern tundra when listening to this masterpiece. The northern tundra as a state of mind. We first released the album on CD only, in hand packaged, numbered "arrigato packs". Two editions I believe, 500 black/white, then 500 with purple taint, both with bronze pantone (an obsession of mine). By public demand, we also did an edition of the by the time dying format "vinyl": 500 double LPs with embossing. I remember Henning who worked at Tiger at the time kept a list of people requesting it on vinyl to convince me. All formats are sold out by now, but be do have some copies of the equally massive follow-up, Dissonance. The artwork by Johannes Høie really lifts the album, making it one of the defining Fysisk Format releases.

"Through merciless isolation - where the cold has shattered all unnecessary tones - frugal and clear-headed contrasts build a beautiful, yet disturbing atmosphere of dystopian melancholy. To this backdrop lyrics about unwanted obsessions, personal insufficiency and broken relations are performed: poetry juxtaposed with politics. "Like Iron I Rust" feels like a warning signal of something pending, something threatening and unknown."

Still in their early twenties, the members of Fanatisme have taken inspiration from the lunatic forest-worshipping era of Ulver and Darkthrone and combined it with the gothic surge of Christian Death and The Cure.

The result is a idiosyncratic rush of post-punk influenced black metal, a spine chilling celebration of the fellowship of man, life's beauty and the coming of death.

With the aid of Deathhammer's Cato Stormoen, the band recorded the album the Easter of 2025. It is mixed by Mode Kjevik (Shament, Resept) and mastered by Will Killingsworth (Orchid, Ampere).
