GAIA - EINE SYMPHONIE FÜR MUTTER NATUR UND ALLE IHRE GESCHÖPFE

Um 18:00 Uhr findet eine Konzerteinführung statt. Saskia Quené im Gespräch mit Inez Colyn (WWF Schweiz) und Silvan Loher.

Das Sinfonische Orchester Schweiz unter der Leitung von Annedore Neufeld spielt die Uraufführung der neuen Symhonie "GAIA" von Silvan Loher. In dieser setzt der Komponist sein langjähriges Engagement für Natur, Klima und Tiere in eine mitreissende und ergreifende symphonische Musik um.

Im Vorwort der Partitur steht: "Dieses Werk ist eine Liebeserklärung an unsere Natur und ihre Geschöpfe, eine Hymne auf ihre Schönheit, ein Klagegesang über den Verlust von Natur und Arten infolge der Biodiversitätskrise sowie ein Wutschrei darüber, dass hauptsächlich wir Menschen für diese Krise verantwortlich sind und viel zu wenig dagegen unternehmen."

Im Gleichen Konzert erklingt noch ein anderes zeitgenössisches Werk mit einem ähnlichen Hintergrund, das "Insect Concerto" von Gregor Mayrhofer, sowie das unsterbliche zweite Klavierkonzert von Sergei Rachmaninow.

Das Konzert wird auch am 20. Februar in Schaffhausen gespielt (19:30, Kirche St. Johann) sowie am 22. Februar in Brugg AG (17:00, Reformierte Kirche)

Heute stelle ich den vierten Datz meiner Symphonie vor, das Finale: IV. Balaena mysticetus

Balaena mysticetus ist der lateinische Name des Grönlandwals, eines der schönsten und majestätischsten Tiere unserer Erde und zugleich ein genetischer Superheld: Der Grönlandwal ist genetisch immun gegen Krebs und kann über 200 Jahre alt werden. Er ist das langlebigste aller Säugetiere. Der Satz ist inspiriert von den zahlreichen Geräuschen des Meeres sowie von der faszinierenden visuellen Erscheinung eines riesigen Wals. Eingebaut ist auch der Schrei eines oft missverstandenen Vogels, für den ich besondere Sympathien hege und von dem viele nicht wissen, wie bedroht er ist: die Möwe. Dieser Satz ist eine Hymne auf die Schönheit der Natur und ihrer Kreaturen. Der Grönlandwal steht mit seiner Langlebigkeit und genetischen Immunität symbolisch für Resilienz und Hoffnung. Die Menschen haben sämtliche grossen Walarten an den Rand des Aussterbens gebracht, die endgültige Katastrophe jedoch gerade noch rechtzeitig abgewendet. Möge die Menschheit auch in Bezug auf Klimawandel, Massenaussterben und andere ökologische Katastrophen noch rechtzeitig klüger werden, als wir es heute sind!

Today, I'm presenting the fourth and last movement of my symphony, the finale: IV. Balaena mysticetus

Balaena mysticetus is the Latin name of the bowhead whale, one of the most beautiful and majestic animals on our planet and at the same time a genetic superhero: the bowhead whale is genetically immune to cancer and can live for more than 200 years. It is the longest-living of all mammals. This movement is inspired by the many sounds of the sea, as well as by the fascinating visual presence of a gigantic whale. Also woven into the music is the cry of a much misunderstood bird for which I feel a particular sympathy and whose endangered status is unknown to many: the seagull. This movement is a hymn to the beauty of nature and its creatures. With its longevity and genetic immunity, the bowhead whale stands as a symbol of resilience and hope. Humans have driven all large whale species to the brink of extinction, yet managed to avert the final catastrophe just in time. May humanity also grow wiser in time with regard to climate change, mass extinction, and other ecological catastrophes than we are today.

Heute stelle ich den dritten Satz meiner Symphonie vor: Dervonemeton

Ein Nemeton war bei den Kelten eine heilige Stätte, insbesondere ein heiliger Hain. “Dervonemeton” ist das rekonstruierte gallische Wort für „heiliger Eichenhain“. Die Eiche hatte bei den Kelten eine besondere kultische Bedeutung. Dieser Satz drückt das Gefühl des Mystischen und Spirituellen aus, das wir in der Natur erleben können. Die Eiche ist mein Lieblingsbaum. Ich bin alles andere als ein religiöser Mensch und finde menschengemachte Götter oft langweilig und irritierend; doch wenn ich vor einer viele hundert Jahre alten Eiche stehe, empfinde ich eine ausserordentliche Ehrfurcht und Spiritualität. Eingebaut ist auch der Ruf des Rotmilans, eines meiner Lieblingsvögel, der einen sehr charakteristischen, flötenartigen Ruf hat.

Today, I will present the third movement of my symphony: Dervonemeton

Among the Celts, a nemeton was a sacred place, particularly a sacred grove. “Dervonemeton” is the reconstructed Gaulish word for “sacred oak grove.” The oak held a special cultic significance for the Celts. This movement expresses the sense of the mystical and the spiritual that we can experience in nature. The oak is my favorite tree. I am anything but a religious person and often find man-made gods boring or irritating; yet when I stand before an oak that is several hundred years old, I feel an extraordinary sense of reverence and spirituality. Also woven into the music is the call of the red kite, one of my favorite birds, whose voice has a very distinctive, flute-like quality.

Heute stelle ich den zweiten Satz meiner Symphonie vor: CCD – La mort des abeilles

CCD steht für Colony Collapse Disorder, also das Sterben ganzer Bienenvölker. „La mort des abeilles“ (Der Tod der Bienen) ist eine Anspielung auf das wunderbare und poetische Buch La vie des abeilles (Das Leben der Bienen) von Maurice Maeterlinck, veröffentlicht im Jahr 1901. Das Bienensterben steht hier stellvertretend für die Zerstörung der Natur und unserer Welt. Der Satz ist eine apokalyptische Schreckensvision einer zukünftigen kahlen und ungastlichen Erde, von der das meiste Leben verschwunden ist, sowie ein Klagegesang einer verstorbenen Seele, die ihren ehemaligen Wohnort besucht.

Today, I will present the second movement of my symphony: CCD – La mort des abeilles

CCD stands for Colony Collapse Disorder, the disappearance of entire bee colonies. “La mort des abeilles” (The Death of the Bees) is an allusion to the wonderful and poetic book La vie des abeilles (The Life of the Bees) by Maurice Maeterlinck, published in 1901. The death of the bees stands here as a symbol for the destruction of nature and our world. The movement is an apocalyptic vision of a future barren and inhospitable Earth from which most life has vanished, as well as a lament sung by a departed soul visiting its former home.

Dieses Werk ist eine Liebeserklärung an unsere Natur und ihre Geschöpfe, eine Hymne auf ihre Schönheit, ein Klagegesang über den Verlust von Natur und Arten infolge der Biodiversitätskrise sowie ein Wutschrei darüber, dass hauptsächlich wir Menschen für diese Krise verantwortlich sind und viel zu wenig dagegen
unternehmen.

Jeder Satz des Werkes ist von einem oder mehreren Organismen inspiriert, die zugleich für eine übergeordnete philosophische Idee stehen. Heute werde ich den ersten Satz vorstellen:

I. Volvox

Die Volvox ist eine winzige Alge, eine kugelförmige Kolonie von Zellen. In dieser Kugel, der sogenannten „Mutterkolonie“, wachsen neue Kolonien heran, die Tochterkolonien. Wenn diese zu zahlreich und zu gross werden, bringen sie die Mutterkolonie zum Platzen. Die Mutterkolonie stirbt, und die Tochterkolonien werden zu neuen Mutterkolonien. Die Volvox steht hier zudem symbolisch für das Entstehen des ersten Lebens im Wasser und für den ewigen Kreislauf des Lebens. Wie die Volvox besteht auch die Musik aus winzigen Zellen, kleinen Motiven, die heranwachsen und sich vermehren. Insbesondere die Holzbläser stehen für die verschiedenen Tochterkolonien, die innerhalb der „Mutterkolonie“, also des Orchesters, heranwachsen und am Ende das Ganze zum Bersten bringen. Ausserdem imitiert die Musik die rollende Bewegung der Volvox und feiert ihre teils hypnotische Schönheit und teils bizarre Lebensweise, wie sie sich unter dem Mikroskop offenbart (Volvox bedeutet auf Latein „die Rollerin“).

This work is a declaration of love for nature and its creatures, a hymn to its beauty, a lament for the loss of nature and species caused by the biodiversity crisis, and a cry of anger at the fact that we humans are largely responsible for this crisis and are doing far too little to counter it.

Each movement of the work is inspired by one or more organisms, which at the same time stand for a broader philosophical idea. Today, I will talk a bit about the first movement:

I. Volvox

Volvox is a tiny alga, a spherical colony of cells. Within this sphere - the so-called “mother colony” - new colonies grow: the daughter colonies. When these become too numerous and too large, they cause the mother colony to burst. The mother colony dies, and the daughter colonies become new mother colonies. Volvox thus also
symbolically represents the emergence of the first life on earth in water and the eternal cycle of life. Like Volvox, the music consists of tiny cells - small motifs that grow and multiply. The woodwinds in particular represent the various daughter colonies developing within the “mother colony,” that is, the orchestra itself, eventually causing the whole to burst apart. Moreover, the music imitates the rolling motion of Volvox and celebrates its at times mesmerising beauty and at times bizarre way of life, as revealed under the microscope (Volvox means “the roller” in Latin).

My symphony GAIA is finished! What a few months these have been - I have been working and working and working and was fully immersed in the world of my music.

I finished the score a week before christmas, and the orchestral parts just after christmas. After that, I was completely exhausted and felt like a marmot in hibernation mode.

Im Werk setze ich mich mit meiner Liebe zu unserer Natur und ihren Lebewesen auseinander, mit meiner Besorgnis um sie, und mit meiner Wut darüber wie die Menschheit an einem grundsätzlichen Mangel an Respekt gegenüber den Geschöpfen, mit denen wir den Planeten teilen.

Gaia ist die personifizierte Erde aus der griechischen Mythologie, oder "Mutter Natur", und das Werk ist ihr gewidmet. Jeder der vier Sätze ist von einem oder mehreren Organismen, Tier oder Pflanze, inspiriert, die zugleich für eine übergeordnete philosophische Idee stehen.

Über die nächsten Wochen werde ich zu jedem Satz einen Post veröffentlichen, in dem ich meine Ideen präsentiere und die Geschöpfe, von denen der Satz handelt.

In this work, I explore my love for nature and its creatures, my concern for them, and my anger at humanity's fundamental lack of respect for the beings with whom we share the planet.

Gaia is the personified Earth from Greek mythology, or "Mother Nature," and the work is dedicated to her. Each of the four movements is inspired by one or more organisms, animal or plant, which also represent an overarching philosophical idea.

Over the next few weeks, I will publish a post for each movement, presenting my ideas and the creatures the movement is about.
