This is how you put cycling first.

Strasbourg has long been one of France’s leading cycling cities, with more than 600 km of cycle routes across the urban area, including ring and radial connections. Together with its shared bike system and strong regional links, Strasbourg shows what cycling looks like when it is planned as an integral part of the transport system.

"Cycling works when it connects the home to the school, the doctor, the restaurants, the shops, and everything in between.”

The DCE’s Chris Bruntlett sat down with Paolo Barbato of Wiseair to speak about what Italy can learn from the Dutch cycling model.

He highlighted a key lesson: cycling works when cities build networks, not just isolated bike lanes. That means safe routes that connect homes, schools, shops, doctors, stations and workplaces.

When the captain of the Dutch football team backs cycling, people listen.

In the Netherlands, cycling is part of everyday life. Sports stars, politicians and other public figures ride bikes too.

That culture was built over time. Activists pushed for safer streets. Governments invested in bike lanes, parking and better routes. Together, that helped make cycling a normal part of Dutch life.
