Who notices problems first: experts or local communities?

Many environmental challenges are identified through scientific research and official monitoring systems. But across Europe, local communities are increasingly contributing to environmental knowledge through citizen science initiatives.

From monitoring air quality and biodiversity to reporting pollution and documenting local changes, citizens often provide valuable observations that complement scientific data.

According to the European Citizen Science Association, involving communities in data collection can improve both environmental monitoring and public engagement with environmental issues.

Perhaps the question is not whether experts or communities notice problems first.

Perhaps the most effective solutions emerge when they work together.

🇳🇱 Wie merkt problemen als eerste op: experts of lokale gemeenschappen?

Veel milieuproblemen worden vastgesteld via wetenschappelijk onderzoek en officiële monitoringssystemen. Tegelijkertijd dragen lokale gemeenschappen in heel Europa steeds vaker bij aan kennis over het milieu via citizen science-initiatieven.

Van het meten van luchtkwaliteit en biodiversiteit tot het melden van vervuiling en het documenteren van veranderingen in de leefomgeving: burgers leveren waardevolle observaties die wetenschappelijke gegevens aanvullen.

Volgens de European Citizen Science Association kan de betrokkenheid van gemeenschappen bij het verzamelen van gegevens zowel milieumonitoring als maatschappelijke betrokkenheid versterken.

Misschien is de vraag niet of experts of gemeenschappen problemen als eerste opmerken.

Misschien ontstaan de beste oplossingen wanneer zij samenwerken.

GHow do you keep people engaged when learning online?

During our first Beyond the Screen webinar, educators and trainers explored motivation, engagement and well-being in online learning.

One conclusion stood out: technology alone does not create engagement.

That is why our second interactive webinar will focus on storytelling and how narrative approaches can make online learning more human, relatable and engaging.

Did you know that many incidents of hate speech never get reported?

Across Europe, many people who experience hate speech or hate crime choose not to report it. Some believe nothing will change. Others do not know where to seek help or are unsure whether their experience is serious enough to report.

As a result, official statistics often tell only part of the story.

This is one reason why awareness matters. Understanding what hate speech looks like, knowing where support is available and recognising that such experiences should not be normalised are important steps towards safer and more inclusive communities.

🇳🇱Wist je dat veel gevallen van haatspraak nooit worden gemeld?

In heel Europa kiezen veel mensen die te maken krijgen met haatspraak of haatmisdrijven ervoor om hiervan geen melding te maken. Sommigen denken dat er toch niets zal veranderen. Anderen weten niet waar zij hulp kunnen zoeken of twijfelen of hun ervaring wel ernstig genoeg is om te melden.

Daardoor laten officiële cijfers vaak maar een deel van de werkelijkheid zien.

Juist daarom is bewustwording belangrijk. Begrijpen wat haatspraak is, weten waar ondersteuning beschikbaar is en erkennen dat dergelijke ervaringen niet genormaliseerd mogen worden, zijn belangrijke stappen richting veiligere en inclusievere gemeenschappen.

What should every child know before going online?

Protecting personal data. Recognising misinformation. Understanding digital footprints. Using AI responsibly. Knowing how to respond to cyberbullying.

These are no longer optional skills — they are essential for navigating today’s digital world safely and confidently.

That is why we are pleased to share one of the first results of the CARE project: the learning module Digital Foundations and Safe Surfing is available on the project platform.

Designed for newly arrived migrant and refugee pupils aged 7–14, the module helps learners develop digital literacy, online safety awareness and confidence in the language of their host country through practical, age-appropriate activities.

This is the first module of the CARE learning programme, with additional modules currently in development.

🇳🇱 Wat zou ieder kind moeten weten voordat het online gaat?

Persoonlijke gegevens beschermen. Desinformatie herkennen. Begrijpen wat een digitale voetafdruk is. AI op een verantwoorde manier gebruiken. Weten hoe je kunt omgaan met cyberpesten.

Dit zijn geen extra vaardigheden meer — ze zijn essentieel om veilig en zelfverzekerd deel te nemen aan de digitale wereld.

Daarom delen we graag een van de eerste resultaten van het CARE-project: de leermodule Digital Foundations and Safe Surfing is nu beschikbaar op het projectplatform.

De module is ontwikkeld voor nieuw aangekomen migranten- en vluchtelingenleerlingen van 7 tot 14 jaar en helpt hen digitale vaardigheden, online veiligheidsbewustzijn en vertrouwen in de taal van hun gastland op te bouwen via praktische activiteiten.

Dit is de eerste module van het CARE-leerprogramma. De overige modules zijn momenteel in ontwikkeling.

This week, MVIdee participated in the Let Her In International Networking Event in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

As a member of the , we joined organisations from across Europe working in the fields of gender equality, social inclusion, education and community development.

Over two days, participants exchanged good practices, explored new partnership opportunities and discussed practical approaches to stakeholder engagement, project dissemination, co-creation, social innovation, AI tools for outreach and future funding opportunities.

The event also created space for strengthening collaboration within the network through knowledge sharing, peer learning and the development of new ideas for future cooperation.

One message stood out throughout the discussions: meaningful impact is built through strong partnerships, continuous learning and collaboration across sectors and borders.

We are grateful to Let Her In for bringing together such a diverse community of organisations and look forward to continuing our cooperation within the network.

🇳🇱 Deze week nam MVIdee deel aan het Let Her In International Networking Event in Bangor, Noord-Ierland.

Als lid van het Let Her In-netwerk kwamen we samen met organisaties uit heel Europa die actief zijn op het gebied van gendergelijkheid, sociale inclusie, onderwijs en gemeenschapsontwikkeling.

Gedurende twee dagen wisselden deelnemers goede praktijken uit, verkenden zij nieuwe samenwerkingsmogelijkheden en bespraken zij stakeholderbetrokkenheid, disseminatie, co-creatie, sociale innovatie, AI-tools voor outreach en toekomstige financieringsmogelijkheden.

Het evenement bood daarnaast ruimte voor kennisdeling, wederzijds leren en het ontwikkelen van nieuwe ideeën voor toekomstige samenwerking binnen het netwerk.

Eén boodschap kwam steeds terug: duurzame impact ontstaat door sterke partnerschappen, continu leren en samenwerking over sectoren en landsgrenzen heen.

Wij bedanken Let Her In voor het samenbrengen van deze diverse gemeenschap van organisaties en kijken uit naar verdere samenwerking binnen het netwerk.

Who gets to shape the future of their community?

Young people are often affected by local decisions, yet their voices are rarely included in meaningful ways.

This question lies at the heart of EcoSocial Voices.

Recently, project partners met in The Hague to start developing tools and activities that will help young people identify local challenges, monitor issues that matter to them, and contribute to positive change.

Because participation is more than being asked for an opinion.

It is about having the confidence, skills and opportunity to make your voice count.

Over the coming months, EcoSocial Voices will bring together partners from across Europe to strengthen youth participation, civic engagement and social inclusion through practical learning and collaboration.

What would change if more young people were involved in shaping local decisions?

🇳🇱Wie bepaalt de toekomst van onze gemeenschappen?

Jongeren worden vaak beïnvloed door lokale beslissingen, maar hun stem wordt nog te weinig op een betekenisvolle manier gehoord.

Deze vraag staat centraal binnen EcoSocial Voices.

Onlangs kwamen de projectpartners samen in Den Haag om tools en activiteiten te ontwikkelen die jongeren helpen lokale uitdagingen in kaart te brengen, maatschappelijke vraagstukken te monitoren en bij te dragen aan positieve verandering.

Participatie gaat namelijk verder dan alleen je mening geven.

Het gaat om het vertrouwen, de vaardigheden en de kansen om echt invloed uit te oefenen.

De komende maanden brengt EcoSocial Voices partners uit heel Europa samen om jongerenparticipatie, burgerbetrokkenheid en sociale inclusie te versterken via praktische leeractiviteiten en samenwerking.
