FAIRSPACE: we’re changing the way people experience public space in the Netherlands.
08/06/2026
Last week marked the Week Against Sexual Street Harassment in Rotterdam.
The fourth edition of this awareness month focused on raising awareness and empowering people to take action against unwanted behaviour in public spaces.
Throughout the campaign, we took action through a range of activities. We joined the Night Against Sexual Violence by Plan International and were present at Schouwburgplein to collaborate in the installation “Psst.. Hey Schatje!”. Through this installation, visitors were able to experience the impact of street harassment first-hand. Our team was there to support visitors and share practical ways to intervene safely using our bystander intervention method and the 5Ds.
Fairspace founder Laura also joined a panel discussion at Ferry Rotterdam on the experiences of q***r women in public spaces. Together, we discussed the street harassment legislation and how bystander intervention can help when people witness harassment in public.

France is cracking down on sexism in advertising.
New rules mean ads that objectify women or reinforce harmful stereotypes can be banned. Not just “bad taste”, but content that contributes to inequality.
Because ads don’t just sell products. They shape how we see gender, power and what’s “normal”.
TW: Racial slur
The legal system should be a place where all citizens are equal, an apparatus that protects people from racism.
White studying law, noticed racism is actually uncontestedly present in the material she was learning. In this guest video column she wonders, what does this do with the prejudices held by her co-students?
Have you heard of the prototype paradox?
This paradox points to the way in which women who do not look or act stereotypically feminine are less likely to be seen as victims of harassment. This results in bystanders intervening later, when they see this harassment happen.
Why is nightlife so often the scene in which harassment or other types of unsafe situations take place?
explains the factors that play a part, such as the idea of anonimity and the use of substances such as alcohol.
Do you feel safe in nightlife?🪩

41% of young people see LGBTQI+ people as inferior to heterosexuals. Let that sink in. 🌈
Research from the University of Amsterdam shows a sharp rise in these attitudes since 2022.
Experts point out that conservative views among youth aren’t new but they are growing fast. And that has real consequences for safety, inclusion and everyday life.
So the question is: where is this coming from and what are we normalizing?
