✨ Water Star: where water becomes a galaxy.

In a world shaped by AI, we are longing for something real.

Meet Water Star, where nature, science, and human imagination come together to transform water into a living galaxy of light.

Created with bioluminescent proteins, this quiet cosmos reveals water in a completely new way: glowing, breathing, and alive within nature itself.

A universe made of water.
A galaxy made by nature.

The Birth of a Water Star ✨

Somewhere in a distant galaxy, or closer to home?

Our process of prototyping reveals how deeply connected everything is, microcosms reflecting macrocosms. What feels cosmic can also be microscopic.

How would you describe what you see?

Every project begins with a question.

What if we could clean the sky?
What if light could help feed the world?
What if a road could glow like a painting?

At Studio Roosegaarde, questions become reality.

SMOG FREE TOWER cleans urban air in 6 countries.
GROW uses light to support 20,000 m² of farmland, reducing the need for chemicals.
WATERLICHT reveals the power and poetry of rising water.
SPARK reimagines fireworks as a biodegradable celebration without pollution.
VAN GOGH PATH turns a bicycle road into a living artwork.

Five projects. Five dreams made real.
All born in our Rotterdam studio.

What question should we ask next? 💡

We believe the future of mobility is not a vehicle. It's a relationship.

SYNC is that relationship made visible. Walk across the 100m² membrane and lasers draw blue contours under your feet. Stop, and they dissolve. Share the floor, and your light joins someone else's.

Built with BMWi. Sound by Tale of Us. Debuted at Art Basel.
By blending art and technology, SYNC emphasizes our shared responsibility for a sustainable future.

Light is our language. Movement is our answer.

104,000 luminescent stones. One for every life taken in the Dutch Holocaust.
A breath of light, commissioned by the National Committee for 4 and 5 May.

LEVENSLICHT (Light of Life) began in Rotterdam and travelled to 170 municipalities across the Netherlands in 2020. The stones returned to the homes, schools, and streets where these lives were once lived, bringing memory back into everyday space.

Each pulse of light is a presence. A call to remember.

Join the National Remembrance today again, May 4.
