Cursed opals? 👻 Anyone?
🧟‍♀️🧟‍♀️🧟‍♀️
Many Victorians believed that opals were unlucky and could bring misfortune to their owners. This superstition became especially popular after the publication of Sir Walter Scott’s novel “Anne of Geierstein” in 1829. As a result, people avoided buying or wearing opal jewellery because they feared it was cursed. Over time, this belief faded, and today opals are admired for their beauty and rarity 🌚

So… anyone feeling lucky? 🍀

Old or very old amethysts? Which ones are your favorite? 🔮

Boring text below:

Amethysts have captivated jewelry lovers for centuries, but during the Georgian (1714–1837) and Victorian (1837–1901) eras, they became true symbols of elegance and spirituality.

In Georgian jewelry, richly saturated amethysts were often hand-cut and set in closed-back gold settings, allowing candlelight to bring their violet depths to life. Every piece was handcrafted, making each jewel wonderfully unique.

The Victorians embraced amethysts for their beauty and symbolism. Queen Victoria’s love of colored gemstones helped popularize them, while their association with wisdom and sincerity made them a favorite for sentimental jewelry.

✨ Which era speaks to you more? 👀

The romantic charm of Victorian jewels or the artisanal beauty of Georgian treasures? 🔮

250 year old POISSARDE earrings 🍒 gold wire with silver nests 🍒 foiled garnets 🍒 authentic Georgian era jewelry 🍒 hallmarks 🍒 excellent condition 🍒

Hope they are sold tonight 🍷

Boring text below:

Poissarde earrings are a distinctive French earring style that emerged around the French Revolution and became especially fashionable during the Directory (1795–1799), Consulate, and First Empire (1799–1815), remaining popular into the 1820s.

The name poissarde literally means “fishwife” or female fish seller. It refers to the market women of Les Halles in Paris, who were famous not only for selling fish but also for their political influence during the Revolution - particularly the Women’s March on Versailles in October 1789. These women became symbols of the common people and their style influenced contemporary fashion.

Some historians believe the earring’s form evolved from the polished mussel shells traditionally worn by Parisian fishwives, while others see the name as reflecting the association with these influential market women rather than a direct design lineage.

Poissarde earrings are immediately recognizable by:
An oval or circular hoop reinforced with a characteristic S-shaped central brace.
A back-to-front ear wire that threads through the ear from behind before closing at the front.
Lightweight but often elaborate openwork construction.
Decoration with enamel, repoussé gold, filigree, paste stones, turquoise, pearls, or regional motifs, depending on where they were made.

The French Revolution transformed jewelry fashion. Large aristocratic diamond jewels fell out of favor during the Terror, while simpler gold ornaments inspired by classical antiquity became fashionable.
Poissarde earrings fit this new aesthetic perfectly: they were associated with the people yet could be crafted in fine gold for wealthy clients. By the Empire period, they had become fashionable across social classes.
