How can we prevent future accidents if we don't fully learn from past ones? This is a pressing question for African aviation.
A recent IATA analysis revealed a concerning data gap: of 42 accidents in Africa between 2018 and 2023, only eight have published final reports. Timely and transparent accident investigation is key to building a strong safety culture. It turns each accident into a lesson that can prevent future ones.
Global standards require countries to publish final reports within 12 months, but this doesn't always happen. Without this data, it's difficult to create effective safety systems and improve aviation safety in Africa.
What steps can the industry take to support better reporting and data sharing?

๐ ๐โ๏ธ Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Kenya: Paving the way for greener skies
The future of aviation is greener! Kenya is advancing research on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a cleaner, low-carbon alternative to traditional jet fuel that helps reduce aviationโs environmental footprint.
A recent report, Feasibility Study on the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels in Kenya (under ICAOโEU support), confirms that Kenya has the right conditions to build a domestic SAF industry.
According to the study, Kenya could produce up to 200 million litres of SAF per year by 2030 using waste-based feedstock such as used cooking oil (UCO).
The report also highlights other potential feedstocks for longer-term SAF production such as municipal solid waste (MSW), sugarcane residues (cane tops), and water hyacinth, which could support a sustainable SAF supply chain in Kenya.
Under the global ACTโSAF initiative led by ICAO (with support from the EU), Kenya is part of a network of countries working to build capacity, do feasibility studies, and support SAF deployment worldwide.
At AviAssist, we believe this presents a real opportunity, not just for Kenya, but for African aviation generally.

We are pleased to announce that the 44th edition of Safety Focus magazine is now available for download ๐ aviassist.org/magazine.
As always our magazine features a wide range of articles that highlight key lessons and insights for aviation safety in Africa and beyond.
In this edition:
๐โPull Up, Captainโ by Mark Lacagnina
A detailed account of the Precision Air ATR 42 accident at Bukoba, Tanzania, where ignoring terrain warnings and the first officerโs pleas led to tragedy. The article underscores the importance of respecting safety systems, crew input, and the challenges of visual approaches in adverse weather.
๐ โContinued Airworthiness vs. Continuing Airworthinessโ by Stefan Machita (republished with permission from Airbus).
An essential clarification of two terms often confused in aviation. Continuing airworthiness refers to the daily responsibility of operators to keep each aircraft safe to fly, while continued airworthiness focuses on the long-term design integrity and safety of an aircraft type, overseen by manufacturers and regulators.
These and other articles in this edition emphasize why continuous learning and professional development are vital to raising the bar for aviation safety across Africa.
