The Kalimba Channel

What a tender honour it was to play the kalimba solos this final weekend of the tour— in my own hometown. I think it was the very first question I asked when they invited me on this tour: “Can I play a kalimba part?” Twenty years ago, @noyanippy opened that door for me at the conservatory — taught me to always carry a kalimba in my pocket, like a secret melody waiting to be sung. I poured myself into it for my final exams. And then… life happened. It all drifted away — until the quiet of lockdown came. The house was full of children, the studio was off-limits during daylight, and so I turned back to the soft wooden hum of the kalimba. I began to explore — what had the world made of it in the meantime? That’s how @the_kalimba_channel came to be. After testing dozens of instruments, a message appeared — from @katkabolf , asking if I’d try one of theirs. What they craft isn’t just an instrument — it’s sculpture. Living, breathing art. So when Avatar came along, I knew exactly what I wanted to hear ringing through that final moment. I recommended @bolf_kalimbas for this European tour. Thank you to @jeremyzuck for the stunning music, and for placing a kalimba solo — right there in the grande finale, after all that sonic fire and fury. I’ve never known another stage where a kalimba player is held so tenderly by the orchestra, where you’re given a melody this pure, this full of air and heart.
