On Friday the fifth company is visited, concluding the programme in Hamburg. Originally founded in the Netherlands back in the 19th century, Philips now operates globally in various divisions, from which Healthcare (also known as Medical Systems) is the largest contributor in terms of sales numbers. In Hamburg specifically X-ray tubes and high voltage generators are manufactured. Philips has prepared a special case study for us giving us an in-depth view into its production processes and production facilities. Key facts about Philips:
• Headquartered in Amsterdam
• Its three main divisions are Consumer Lifestyle, Healthcare and Lighting
• 105,000 employees
• Operations in 60 countries

While this world-leading manufacturer of power systems was originally founded in the UK, its second largest workforce is located in Germany. We will be visiting their aircraft engine manufacturing plant in Dahlewitz close to Berlin. At this facility development packages for the Trent engine family are located as well as the innovative Mechanical Test Operations Centre (MTOC) for testing the mechanical behaviour of gas turbine components. Key facts about Rolls-Royce:
• Headquartered in London, UK
• Businesses in Aviation, Marine and Energy sectors
