FLEX/design
We are a design and innovation consultancy. We create products and experiences that connect the dots between people, technology and business.
We are FLEX/design - a design consultancy from the Netherlands founded in 1989. We love to work alongside our clients in turning their goals into products and services that create economic, social, and environmental value – not just for brands or consumers, but all of us. The Internet has transformed the way we create and interact with objects. Today’s customers demand products and services where

Keeping the whole product life circular and trying to minimise the carbon footprint of the bottle was essential throughout the design process.
We looked into using recycled English milk bottles. However, in the end we settled for a more local source of recycled plastic found here in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Seepje utilises the shells of the Sapindus Mukorossi fruit which contains Saponine. Saponine is a natural form of soap that is released when the shell comes into contact with water.
Ensuring no additional microplastics are in our oceans and keeping the life cycle completely circular. Helping to put our planet first.

We had the pleasure to design and engineer the Seepje bottle and label. Delivering a modern packaging solution with a subtle(ish) nod to the original bar of soap. A playful design that stands out amongst others on the shelf.
and acknowledged the forward-thinking, sustainable, packaging and awarded the big idea with a design of excellence a few years ago.

uses 175 robots for internal transport within the distribution centre, robotic arms are then used for elevating the packages and sorting them to their corresponding ‘smart’ bags. This way, small packages can be sorted 24/7.
Combining thoughtful intuitive design, robotics, and intelligent software, each package can be followed exactly within the sorting centre.
We are over the moon to have PostNL as a long-term partner and look forward to implementing more innovation in the postal logistics market.

Running collaborative workshops and gathering insights from parcel deliverers was essential to understanding their needs.
We integrated a steel wire into the ‘smart’ bag’s seam, giving the bag rigidity and form when the bag is opened, and therefore keeping the bag and its contents in an open, visible, and accessible state. A small nod to the pop-up tent.

Earlier this month PostNL announced the opening of a robotic parcel sorting center for small parcels.
We designed a durable, dual volume, anti-theft, cost-efficient ‘smart’ bag to work in tandem with automated, robotic, sorting arms.
Taking a user-centered design approach throughout the design process was essential. Interactions between the worker, robots, and the ‘smart’ bag produced insights and constraints that helped drive innovation and deliver a successful product.

Numerous features were displayed and communicated at the 2021 show. Here are a few more to name.
Air quality within the car is monitored. When the levels of CO2 and pollution reach a certain point the driver is notified.
The roof itself is made of smart glass, this allows the roof to turn from opaque to transparent at the touch of a button.
A child seat detection sensor gives the driver feedback when the seat is safely and correctly positioned.
All of these features are communicated with the use of ambient lighting.
We value our relationship .roof.systems and thoroughly enjoyed the intense collaboration between our design, engineering and prototyping departments and Inalfas design and technology.

.roof.systems needed their automotive roof functionalities to be integrated into a clean form.
We were tasked to fit the Lidar detection unit into the centre of the roof. Creating a seamless transition from roof to feature which does not become too visually impactful.
We used the roof railings to help integrate the Stereo cameras on each side of the roof. Ensuring a discreet design with maximum functionality.

Design cues were implemented within the cabin to give the user the feeling and understanding of being in a car, without the visual noise and clutter of unrelated features.
The contour of the steering wheel is vacuum formed into the dashboard. Giving a subtle nod to its location without overloading the user with unnecessary information.
The seats have been stripped of classic automotive styling and instead encompass an honest design. Designed so the users view point and positioning is recreated from that of traditional automotive seats
