Indian man Mohan at 74 staged his own funeral to see how much he was loved. After the procession towards the crematorium he opened his eyes and saw how many people were there to commemorate him and surprised everyone he was still alive. There was a fake cremation and yet a whole feast for the villagers.

Reading the whole story, I learned he is the one who build the crematorium and is a respected citizen in the town Konchi. So to me it seems more like a promotional stunt. What do you think: a marketing stunt or a man who would love to found out how much he was loved?

As for me? I also stage fake funerals, but then for photographers to practice, to create portfolio material and become respected farewell photographers.

So this funeral had some photographers present to tell the news and to show this man who attended his funeral.

In Canada was a national funeral for Serge Fiori, famous gitarist and rockband singer. Céline Dion performed during his ceremony.

A question for my fellow funeral photographers:

Of course, there are pictures from this event - it being a national funeral and all.

What I'm curious about is whether there were specialized funeral photographers present, or if it was primarily press/media photographers covering the event.

I ask because I know the purpose behind the photography makes a huge difference in the outcome. When a funeral director hires me to photograph their services, I deliver a completely different set of images than when I'm photographing for the grieving family.

For families, I focus on capturing intimacy and raw emotions - those precious, quiet moments of connection and remembrance. But for funeral homes, the approach is more commercial and promotional.

Has anyone else noticed this distinction in their work? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the client's intent shapes your photographic approach during such sensitive moments.

“Had ik dit maar geweten...”
Een tijdje geleden was ik op een feestje. Iedereen die mij een beetje kent, weet dat ik makkelijk contact maak en dit was zo’n gesprek dat ineens de diepte in ging.
Achteraan op de dansvloer sprak ik een vrouw, ik schatte haar iets jonger dan mij en zij vroeg wat mij bezig hield in het dagelijks leven. Ik vertelde dat ik de opleiding tot bekwaam afscheidsfotograaf volg. Er viel een stilte. Ik zag iets in haar ogen veranderen. Toen vertelde ze me dat haar vader een maand geleden was overleden. Ze had nog nooit gehoord van afscheidsfotografie. Haar ogen vulden zich met tranen toen ze zei: “Had ik dit maar geweten...”
Ze vertelde dat ze die dag, de dag van het afscheid, grotendeels in een waas had beleefd. Dat ze zo graag een tastbare herinnering had gehad, foto’s om op terug te kijken, een album om erbij te pakken als de leegte net iets te groot voelde.
We hebben lang gepraat. Een moment van verbinding tussen twee mensen, midden op een feestje, over verlies, liefde en het belang van herinneringen. Toen we afscheid namen, liet haar verhaal me niet meer los.
Want dit gebeurt vaker. Afscheidsfotografie is nog lang niet bij iedereen bekend. Het is nog geen vanzelfsprekend onderdeel van het gesprek rondom een uitvaart.
Tijdens mijn opleiding verdiepen we ons niet alleen in de technische kant van fotografie, maar ook in hoe we de bekendheid van afscheidsfotografie kunnen vergroten. We gaan in gesprek met uitvaartleiders, met professionals in het werkveld, om ruimte te maken voor deze vorm van herinneren. Om eventuele drempels of weerstand weg te nemen. Om ervoor te zorgen dat mensen in ieder geval weten dat deze optie bestaat.
Want hoe waardevol is het, als je de kans krijgt om liefdevol en respectvol terug te kijken op een afscheid? Als je beelden hebt die je helpen herinneren aan het samenzijn, de bloemen, de hand op een schouder, de liefde die voelbaar was.
Juist in een periode waarin zoveel aan je voorbijgaat.
Soms begint verandering met één gesprek. En ik hoop dat er nog velen zullen volgen. Hoe promoten jullie afscheidsfotografie?

Hoeveel waarde heeft een afscheidsalbum?

Dat weet ik wel, maar zien anderen pas werkelijk achteraf.

Zie de reactie van Twan. Hij vindt het mooi, waardevol en is trots, althans dat laatste maak ik erop uit.

Verlies is er. Verdriet is er. Dat nemen we niet weg. Maar wat nou als je het draaglijker kunt maken door zoiets waardevols als een herinneringsalbum over te houden?

Volgens Twan moet je het ook gewoon doen, al weet je vooraf niet wat het voor je mag betekenen!

I love to see it being used at a funeral with a bunch of flowers that can be woven through the open spaces.
At first it might be awekward to see
a body in a cloth underneath. But things become normal quite easy, as long as we all act normal around it.

Jeff and I know each other 32 years. It's a long time, if I think about it. We are happy to celebrate Christmas together and have many loved ones around us.

I call myself a lucky girl. Keeping memories alive, creating new ones, and capturing many of them for ourselves and others.
