Most visitors know the River Vecht as the lifeline of Breukelen. But there is another waterway with a story of its own: the Danne.

Long before roads connected villages and towns, the Danne quietly flowed through the landscape, linking people, farms, and trade routes. Today, this modest stream remains one of Breukelen’s hidden treasures, offering a glimpse into the village’s historic relationship with water.

While the Vecht attracts the spotlight, the Danne tells a more intimate story — of everyday life, local history, and the waterways that helped shape Breukelen into the place it is today.

In this video, you can even spot a very small-sized form of shipping on the Danne: stand-up paddleboards (SUP) gliding through the water. A modern way to travel this historic waterway!

Next time you explore the Original Brooklyn, look beyond the famous river and discover the charm of the Danne.

Will football be bridging the world?

Watching a FIFA World Cup match in Brooklyn is an experience unlike any other. As the streets fill with fans from every corner of the globe, the borough becomes a vibrant celebration of football, culture, and community.

The journey begins with the tournament’s opening match on 11 June, when the world’s attention turns to North America for the start of the FIFA World Cup. Dutch supporters in Brooklyn will be especially eager for the Netherlands’ first group-stage match on 14 June, as OnsOranje begins its quest for football’s ultimate prize.

One of the most spectacular places to experience the tournament will be the special FIFA Fan Festival at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Set against the iconic backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the New York skyline, the festival will bring together thousands of supporters to watch matches on giant screens. For Dutch supporters, watching World Cup matches in Brooklyn carries a special meaning. 🧡 From Breukelen to Brooklyn, Oranje is everywhere!

New York is turning orange as KNVB and OnsOranje arrive in the United States for an unforgettable World Cup journey. ⚽

But it’s not just orange on display all over Brooklyn. The blue of Curaçao is part of the celebrations too. The Caribbean island nation, and constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, has also qualified and is bringing excitement and pride to football fans across the Dutch Kingdom. And in the Caribbean communities in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn is part of the FIFA World Cup, for instance with a great viewing arena, right at the Brooklyn Bridge. Look at these amazing images by Dutch photographer Roger Neve, to showcase the Dutch team across the city where Dutch heritage still lives on.

The Schermerhorn family was one of the original Dutch dynasties of New York with a strong Brooklyn connection. Schermerhorn (Brooklynites tend to pronounce as Skimmerhorn) is a Dutch family name, taken from a village in North Holland. Schermerhorn Street is well-known, as well as the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station. This post shows that several Schermerhorn family members were actually living in Brooklyn.

Repost • The Schermerhorn house, located at 3rd Avenue and 28th Street, was a wood-frame and stone building located on the former Schermerhorn farm property. At the time of this 1883 photograph, Gowanus Bay nearly touched 3rd Avenue, today the house would be in the shadow of the BQE.

The Story of Nijenrode Bier – A Taste of Breukelen

We enjoyed this local craft beer at SameSame Thai restaurant in Breukelen. Nestled along the picturesque River Vecht and inspired by the historic castle of Nijenrode, Nijenrode Beer was born from a simple idea: to capture the spirit of Breukelen in a bottle.

The journey began in 2010 when entrepreneur Harvey Wells, then a student at Nyenrode Business Universiteit, set out to create a beer that reflected the rich history, character, and entrepreneurial tradition of the area. Together with brewer Huib van der Stam, he developed a distinctive amber ale after months of experimentation and tasting.

Named after the iconic Kasteel Nijenrode, whose history dates back to the 13th century, Nijenrode Beer combines craftsmanship with local heritage. Brewed using natural ingredients, unfiltered and unpasteurized, it undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle, resulting in a rich, full-bodied flavor with subtle spicy notes.

What started as a passion project has grown into a proud local product—one that celebrates both the history of Breukelen and the innovative spirit that continues to thrive there today.

From a Brooklyn perspective, maybe we should encourage a collab with The Brooklyn Brewery D**e Beer or other enthusiasts…

🍺 Nijenrode Beer: where history, craftsmanship, and the spirit of Breukelen come together in every bottle.
