David Ryshpan

Many thanks to Daniel & Kurt of Tyrant Studios for the warm welcome last night. Huge kudos to Ben Henriques, David Caballero and Arvind Ramdas for playing so well with zero rehearsal! Vancouver has a reputation as a no-fun city but I have walked by no shortage of venues, solid stock in record stores, and heard some great players at last night's jam. A special shout out to Jonny Tobin who sounded fantastic at his Infidels Jazz residency at Meo Chinatown.

I can't fathom that it's been two years since I wrote and sent a Ryshpan Report. I guess I've moved more to social media and to video since then. C’est la rentrée and this autumn finds me more at home in Montreal, teaching and working on an upcoming project to be divulged later. This month features the last two hometown chances to witness ’s multidisciplinary performance “Chant 1: La Nuit du cœur,” and the live début of ’s acclaimed solo album. I also get to join the young lions .rame & in their inspiring solo projects.

What an immense honour to wrap up ’s European tour at the hallowed Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. It was our first international tour with this lineup and I hope for many more to come.

Now to switch gears entirely and join at tonight and tomorrow!

July is going to be a busy month...
I'll be going to brand new places as far-flung as Les Escoumins, QC (with Sonia Johnson Jazz) and the Faroe Islands (with Kleztory)! In the Faroe Islands I'll be making my chamber recital début playing music from Faroese composers Atli Petersen, Kristian Blak and Eli Tausen à Lava. After our SOLD-OUT show at the renowned Concertgebouw, I'll hop over to Austria to play in a treehouse, and then on a lake in Germany, with Vox Sambou.

As always, I am accepting coffee and record store recommendations in Amsterdam and Düsseldorf.

June calendar is out!
Starting off with Kleztory with one of our rare local gigs as we warm up for our European tour and a future record. The rest of the month is warming up for summer – records & cocktails, a Colombian salsa bash, and contemporary Latin jazz on St-Laurent.

I am home in Montreal for June, and less gigs means a little more time for teaching, recording, writing and producing. Slide in my DMs if you need lessons or tracks this month!

to last weekend playing with . It’s always a pleasure to explore the deep well of salsa repertoire with this phenomenal crew of musicians and people. I’m so proud of the community they’ve created, bringing out dancers of all skill levels and generation to discover the power of live music. The night was continued by the one and only and our brothers in . It was a party to remember.

May 2025 is full of big sounds. Improvisations with the phenomenal Didem Basar, salsa dura hasta la muerte with La Murga, Gia Fu and Jimmy Saa, and jumping into Steve Rosenbloom's big band album launch.

The longest tour diary video – actually the longest video I have made to date, full stop – is now live on my channel. I am extremely proud to be on tour with Alexandra Templier and crew, bringing creative music to smaller markets across New Brunswick and Québec.
