The dismantling of trade unions and anti-union practices have been a structural part of the electronics value chain since its inception๐ญ.
But states also play a decisive role: they can either guarantee or prevent trade union organization โ.
Examples of how governments become barriers to independent trade unions:
A) Prohibition of independent trade unions (China)
B) Monopoly on trade union representation (Vietnam)
C) Legal and administrative barriers (Malaysia)
D) Persecution, harassment and even murder of trade union leaders (Philippines)
More information in the report โNo union, no voice: nine ways the electronics industry craks down on labour rightsโ by Good Electronics.

๐ปBehind the sleek designs of our laptops and mobile phones ๐ฑ lies a reality we rarely see:
Millions of workers in the electronics industry suffer from precarious working conditions โ .
And this reality is no accident. At the root of the problem is the systematic repression of trade union freedom โ.
This repression is not due to the particular context of each country: there is a global pattern, reinforced by governments and corporations, that sustains the accumulation model of large technology companies
๐ The report โNo union, no voiceโ by the Good Electronics network identifies the main
barriers to freedom of association present throughout the sector.

Efforts to establish a global minerals agreement at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) met opposition, though talks will continue. The proposal aims to establish a panel of experts that will identify ways to prevent further environmental harm of mining high-risk minerals and promote responsible sourcing. However, differing national priorities pose challenges to binding multinational commitments on mining supply chain human rights and environmental standards.
In this article published in Climate Home News, the regulation of mineral supply chains essential to electronics, energy transition technologies, and consumer products seeks to identify minerals associated with elevated risk profiles and to foster more robust environmental and human rights standards throughout the extraction, refining, and trade lifecycles.

UNEA Talks Call Attention on Human Rights Abuses Linked to Mining
As states meet for the United Nations Environment Assembly, Colombia and several other countries have proposed a binding global treaty to address environmental and human rights risks in mineral extraction, including measures for due diligence and supply chain transparency.
Human Rights Watch reports that communities impacted by mineral extraction are still grappling with land dispossession, environmental harm, unsafe working conditions, and violations on labor and Indigenous rights, especially in areas that provide minerals for electronics and energy technologies.

U.S. Group Takes Apple to Court Over Alleged Use of Congo Conflict Minerals
An advocacy group in the U.S. is suing Apple, saying that the company profited from using conflict minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. The case filed in Washington D.C., argues that Appleโs supply chain due diligence failed to stop the use of tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold in its global supply chain that was linked to armed violence, forced labor, and environmental damages.
