This page is the mirror of my Instagram page Nathan Favot and the workshop I organized in the Black Magic Darkroom

The MADLAB is an art collective which popped out of the glass department 5 years ago. At its root, 5 artists with different backgrounds and styles who simply loved to work together. Our decision was to avoid specific concepts, goals and meanings within our projects and collaborations. Most of the works would never reach a final version and could always be considered as material to be re-used, re-installed and endlessly re-interpreted in relation to the place where they would have to appear.

Inside the vessel, light defines the scene.

Fluorescent panels flatten the space while shadows reclaim its edges.
Passengers stand in proximity yet remain isolated, absorbed in their own passage.
The black and white treatment emphasizes geometry over anecdote.
Windows, doors, railings and reflections form a rigid framework against which human movement becomes fluid and unstable.

These images are not about individuals.
They are about a shared condition of transit.

Captured on 4x5 large format film.

Exposure times calibrated to the motion of the boat.

The Crossing at Night

From deck to cabin, the ferry observes the city as it drifts between shores. In black and white, the night becomes a field of gradients. Light trails carve temporary lines across water and steel.

The vessel is not only a means of transport. It is a point of view. A moving platform from which the city is redrawn with every crossing.

Long exposure transforms navigation into inscription.
Movement becomes memory.

The ferry becomes the frame.
A crossing becomes a room.
A space of transit turned into a site of observation.
Between two shores something shifts.
Not arrival. Not departure.
The interval.

Every crossing carries a story.

In mythology, Charon ferries souls across the river between worlds.

The IJveer performs a quieter version of this ritual every day.

Between departure and arrival there is a suspended interval.

A moment where identity softens.
Where destination briefly dissolves.
IJ’VEER explores that threshold.

Analog film. Long exposure. No staging.

IJ’VEER

What happens when the ferry becomes both subject and exhibition space?

For years the IJveer has carried passengers across the water between Amsterdam Centraal and Noord. Free of charge, continuous, anonymous. A space of transition.

This series is photographed from within the ferry itself.

Long exposures allow movement and duration to inscribe the image. The crossing becomes the subject.
The next step is simple. Present the work inside the ferry where it was made.
