Rain chains or kusari-doi are an ancient traditional Japanese alternative to rain pipes. Their design can be very simple or highly intricate, and they can be a lovely feature on the side of a building or pergola. They are mesmerizing to watch during a downpour and so is the sound of water trickling down…
If you wish to collect the rainwater you can simply place a bucket underneath, or you can let the water be absorbed into the ground at the base of moisture loving plants such as ferns.

Very happy with the final outcome of this Hilversum garden, elegant but with a distinct zen atmosphere, and blending in perfectly with the house itself. A garden to admire and enjoy!

Some impressions from the garden that we planted last November in Amsterdam, now at its summer peak. Despite being heavily attacked by slugs the plants are mostly thriving and only some of the ground cover between the stepping stones needs to be replanted this year, so it’s a success!

Total makeover project for this family garden in Hilversum, with a new garden room for cozy evenings by the fireplace, big flower beds with woodland planting to walk through on stepping stones, a bubbling water bowl, and a Mediterranean sitting area to enjoy in the evening sun surrounded by the relaxing scent of lavender and jasmine.
Construction is about to start and I can’t wait to share the results!

One garden, infinite possibilities… here are four design options for the same space, offering the same elements in completely different shapes. Curves are a good way to pack a lot within a small space, while diagonal lines make a narrow garden seem wider.
