Beams of soft light illuminate the complex maze of narrow alleyways, the clinking of metal crafting intricate designs, the ever-present smoky smell of leather, decorative carpets giving texture to every surface. Wares in spectrums of colours and in darker passages, hundreds of floating lamps creating shapely shadows. It’s an overwhelming feast for the senses. It happens, as the sun moves, in stereo, amplified crackling microphones and hypnotic voices begin to fill the air from all directions. The already fast-paced heartbeat suddenly shifts into chaos within seconds. The overflowing pathways soon resemble a swarm of bees. Groups of hooded cloaks move swiftly and with purpose through the crowds. The screeching and frantic honking of scooters weaving through bodies of people. Overloaded bicycles pedalling at breakneck speeds. You have found yourself right in the middle of a race, one you were unaware was taking place. And the only way you could truly understand the incredible urgency would be for you to fully immerse yourself by observing Ramadan Fasting takes dedication; it creates gratitude for things we take for granted; it’s healing to the body and soul. As quickly as the rush began, just as immediate the momentum comes to a halt. And a culture that functions on movement and interaction falls into a quiet peacefulness. Families, friends, neighbours, strangers, they all gather together. They forget about the pressures of life and choose to rather focus on what is most important: community, mindfulness and nourishment. The usual view of Table Mountain from our apartment window was obscured by piles of clothes. A Red Hot Chili Peppers record playing on the vinyl was sending warm rhythms through the house as I was sitting on the wooden floor, negotiating the capacity of my already overflowing bag. With no solid plan, and only the advice from a Dutch couple we had met at a Mexican restaurant one random night, “Whatever you do once you get to Amsterdam, make sure you find an apartment within the ring”, - We were packing our lives into two backpacks, anxiously excited about relocating to Europe. The dream was simple: shake things up by moving to a new continent and pivoting careers. “I need a new drink, in a new place, with new people….oh, and I want to become a tour guide”. Or as I like to describe tour guides, “The ground troops of the travel and tourism industry” Sometimes in life, like when travelling, all you need is a badly planned dream and the willingness to take a risk…. Here we are, a decade later, a decade as tour guides, tour coordinators and travel planners. Most importantly, though, a decade of travelling. So what insight and wisdom have I acquired from this decade submerged in travel and tourism? Firstly, the true magic of travel is found in the in-between moments, so go slow. Equally important, the best encounters happen when you take the time and make the effort to fully immerse yourself in your destination. Thirdly, we all want to experience the popular attractions, which are popular because they are incredible. But don’t forget to combine these sights with less explored adventures, because those often make for the most meaningful trips. I have often found that some of the most memorable trips I’ve taken were to places I wasn’t planning on visiting. The first trip Joe and I took together was to the tropical east coast of our continent. At the time, Mozambique wasn’t even on my radar; I was dreaming of steering a mokoro through the Okavango Delta. But there we were at a pirate party somewhere in South Africa, mid-April, when one of our friends pulled a 500-ml, plastic Coke bottle from his back pocket. It had a faded sticker stuck across the Coca-Cola label, which read ‘Cassandra Tipo Tinto’. He had just been to Mozambique and claimed this was the most valuable item he returned with. Traditional Mozam-made pineapple rum! To this day, it’s the best rum that has ever crossed my lips. By the third sip, I swore that come December, I would be sitting on a beach under a palm tree, drinking Tipo Tinto. By December, Joe, myself and one of our best friends were crammed in a Chapas with 25 locals, a chicken and suitcases uneasily tied to the roof of the bus. Riding a dusty, pot-hole-filled dirt road to Inhambane. A month of sand between our toes, waking to the sounds of the ocean, drinking cocktails from coconuts and snorkelling in the technicoloured underwater wonderland of the Indian Ocean…..an untouched, wild paradise. An intentionally out-of-tune guitar, drums blasting at a frequency louder than human ears are capable of hearing and a bass player screaming at the sound engineer Joe and I met in a grunge bar in Cape Town. Hours passed while we connected over a shared curiosity for history, a love of ’90s music and a deep desire to travel. I’m from the desert, a place filled with sand that glistens in the sun and dunes that flow like waves in the vastness of space. Joe is west coast, the vibrant mother city nestled between towering mountain tops and the aquamarine waters of the Atlantic. Both of us were born and raised in Africa, a fate that I still perceive as a privilege! Because of its mere size and nature, every family holiday in Africa inevitably becomes a long road trip, an unexpected expedition rather than a vacation, and often the most challenging route is the only route. These early experiences in travel gave us a need for adventure, a constant search for the road less travelled, and it certainly taught us how to integrate into novel environments.
