Prologue

Was there anything in the story of my birth that was a signal to the busy lane of life I would later have? How did I wind up in the artery of public life, committed to transforming the trajectory we all take as human beings? Driven by a passion that is to date, a longing for a better world, I have walked many roads. From my days in the university to stints in the banking industry and NIMASA, I have beheld the good, the bad, and the ugly.

My dad’s historic departure from our natal Urhobo lineage, coming over to Jimeta-Yola by boat, etched in the history of our lineage, a new tone of life for me and my siblings. That momentous migration to Jimeta announced our discovery of a new home. Through thick and thin, the fame of my dad, an ace photographer for his days, grew. He dined with royalty. He interfaced with the soul of the city of Jimeta. I grew in that community, a seeker of the vibes that kept the city alive. It wasn’t long before soccer became an incredible pastime, a hobby that snowballed over time, into a brief profession, allowing me to play for my home state: Adamawa.

I learnt on the pitch, what happens to our talents when the needed leadership is absent. That led to the desire to get involved in society. From my professional stints in public life, I finally wound up in politics, a field in which I was certain, would allow me to contribute to shaping the leadership of my dear nation. That choice led me back home to begin at the grassroots. I rose through the ranks by dints of hard work, guts and sheer love for humanity.

In the last three decades, I have been actively involved in party politics. I have won and lost elections as a party executive at different levels. From Jimeta to Abuja, I have been privileged to be at the nerve—centre of the political life. The lessons are many, the joys are high, the pains are great and my hopes are profound.

In the snapshots of my story above are humbling and inspiring details that I will share in the course of this maiden narrative of my life. The extent I have come is only possible because of the grace of my Maker. If I was told, sixty years ago, that I would have the life I now have, I could not have imagined it. It would look impossible then. This explains why I have decided to tell my story. Woven as a weaver would a basket, I have woven with words, the events of my life to date, as my own way of adding a narrative to the stories of our struggles for a better nation and a better world.

In the hundreds of pages following are: a grill of pain and joy, a combination of folly and wisdom, a mix of weakness and strength, and a trajectory of highs and lows. I have learnt a lot in more than six decades of being on earth. I have come to appreciate the inestimable value of my salvation in Christ. It is the compass upon which the bearing of life can be properly defined. From my beloved wife to children, relations, friends, allies, mentees, mentors, acquaintances, strangers and colleagues, I have come into fortunes, platforms and privileges, that several decades ago, looked impossible.

I have colored the pages of this book with the lessons I have learnt of life. I am honest here about my limitations and weaknesses, and the lessons I have learnt from them. I have a story to tell, let’s get to it.

My sincerest congratulations to you on your well-deserved victory at the Presidential Primaries of our Party's Special Convention.

The outcome of the event is much more than a huge step for you towards your ambition to lead our great nation and her people, but a fulfillment of the yearnings of a great multitude of Nigerians beyond our party members.

Your aspiration is just an arrowhead of the continued desire of Nigerians to see and feel the realization of our superb potentials as a people and as a nation.

As a party leader, you have immensely, painstakingly and ingeniously deployed both human and material resources, just to ensure that the institutions of democracy are well-oiled to guarantee good governance and service to humanity.

From the days of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) when I was the Chairperson of the FCT Chapter, I had observed your passion as a true Nigerian patriot; your steadfastness as a politician; and your love for the ordinary man, which are all legendary.

Therefore, Asiwaju, as you have led our Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to all-time greatness in the years past, it is now time for you to lead us again into victory in the general elections of 2023 and go on to build on the foundations laid by the administration of His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, and further take Nigeria to its rightful position in the league of nations.

As faithful stakeholders of our great party, the APC, you can always count on our immeasurable support and loyalty as we march towards a historic moment of victory in 2023. We are solidly behind you!

We pray that our Lord continues to grant you the strength, wisdom and health to move us all towards greatness.

The exemplary Chief Sunny Sylvester Moniedafe. (Part One).

Fully exhausted from the day's work, I had no control of my thoughts even as I battled to get busy in the kitchen because the middle belt was truly under fire. The thoughts of this phenomenal and legendary personality kept flashing through my head. I could not resist the temptation of writing after making sure the belly was fully filled.

In this man, I have seen what it means by "early preparation" in achieving a goal. As an aspirant in the recent APC National Convention, this man has showed and done his best. Politics only had her way but I greatly celebrate you sir. You are an icon.

This is a man who understands the workings of his team. He calls makes sure everyone is okay. At least, I won't forget the times we ate fish together as a family. Those are awesome moments we cherish. Your encouragement to us at such times has always sank into my heart, I am benefiting from them.

Truly friends, Chief SSM is a great listener. One who avails himself despite tight and close schedules. He is one is ever ready to listen to your plea and suggest a way out. Aside his accessible nature, he is jovial and lively. Wallahi there is no dull moments around chief. You learn and laugh.

Greater things and testimonies are coming your way my Chief. I hold you in high esteem. You are my legend. God will bless and keep you for us.

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress in Adamawa and aspirant for the post of the APC Deputy National Chairman North during the recent national Convention, Chief Sunny Moniedafe, has said he had cause to be the most disgruntled APC member, but he was not considering quitting the APC.

Moniedafe lamented that, despite committing a lot of resources over a period spanning 21 months seeking to become the Chairman of the APC, subsequently the post of the Deputy National Chairman North, as an aspirant from his adopted home state of Adamawa, he lost out on both positions because of zoning and pressure by stakeholders from the North-East who asked him to step down for Senator Abubakar Kyari.

He said, it was really disturbing to him, that despite being the better candidate, Sen. Kyari, who only came into the picture for the post of Deputy National Chairman, North, zoned to the North East, just 9 days to the convention, became the anointed candidate for the post.

He said, “I tell you I have cause right now to be the most disgruntled, angry individual in the APC. Not because I am better. But because of the time and money I spent for 21 months, with due respect to my friend Sen. Abubakar Kyari, that got it (the post of Deputy National Chairman North). He was only told on 17th March, 9 days to the convention. Today, he’s the deputy national chairman. But I am not bothered. The APC and the country are far better to me.”

Moniedafe, who spoke in Yola, to reaffirm his loyalty to the APC, however, said despite the outcome of the party’s convention, he will not be dumping the APC.

He said, ” You are all aware of what transpired during the National Convention of our dear party, the APC, in Abuja last week, where the most qualified aspirant, my humble self, lost out. First, because of the zoning, when the National Chairmanship was zoned to the North-Central zone.

“Being a loyal party man, a progressive to the core, I obeyed, but as I had alluded to, several times in the past, I shifted my focus to contest for the position of the Deputy National Chairman, North. To say I was the most qualified for this position, as well, will be stating the obvious.


“In spite of this, I lost, after being persuaded by major stakeholders of the North-East, including the Senate President, Governors, former Governors, Senators and so on. However, knowing that the APC is a better option, I have decided that I will remain in the party and strive to make it better.”

According to him, reconciliation was crucial to rebuilding the party for victory ahead of future elections. He expressed optimism that members would put the outcome of the party convention behind them.

Ruining his chances of becoming the deputy national chairman North, as a loss not just for him but also his adopted home state of Adamawa, Moniedafe added that his victory would have sent the message that “we are one, being an Urhobo man from Delta going by his family tree whereas an indigene of Adamawa State.”
