A SOFT ANSWER TURNS AWAY WRATH

Some months back, I had a misunderstanding with a dear friend. I don’t know what happened. One minute we were laughing, the next she said something that hurt me deeply. We eventually quarreled and said hurtful things to each other.

Talk about going from 0 to 100 in a split second. We were both fuming, and the question of who would apologize first began.

I replayed the incident in my head a hundred times and decided she knew better than to trigger me with the way she framed her statement. It felt more like an accusation than a question. I don’t know what was going through her mind, but she had to apologize or that would be the end of our friendship.

Yinmu, we’ve been through this cycle more than 10,000 times in 10 years, but we were both angry and the anger was speaking gibberish. I eventually started missing her after some days and thought of apologizing first, but pride said no.

Eventually, I went to God to judge the matter. I hadn’t even finished thinking of praying about it when I heard this scripture clearly in my spirit: “A soft answer turns away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger – Proverbs 15:1.” I was happy, thinking God was telling me I was right. But I heard it louder this time: “I said a SOFT answer!”

Then it dawned on me. It wasn’t about the other person’s statement that got me angry. It was about my response, my reaction. It wasn’t the tone of the person speaking or how they framed their words. It was about how I am to respond to provocation as a Christian. How God expects me to respond.

I could choose to engage aura for aura, or choose God’s way by calming the tension through my soft response. It’s the answer that turns away wrath. An answer is a response, a reaction. It’s not the trigger, not what was said or how it was said. It’s how you react that makes the difference.

Guess who swallowed her pride and apologized? If you guessed me, you’re right. I had to, after that kind of conviction from the Holy Spirit.

What struck me most is that I had read and quoted that scripture for ages, but this was the first time I truly understood it. Now I know I am in charge of my emotions, and if things get to me, it’s because I allowed it.

I know I still have a long way to go in mastering this new lesson, and I’m trusting the Holy Spirit to help me. Anger is a natural human response, but I feel empowered knowing I determine my reaction to it. So in every aspect of my life, I’m adopting the soft answer approach.

I guess this is what Apostle Paul meant when he said, “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man – Colossians 4:6.”

We’re all walking this journey from earth to glory for the first time. Sharing our lessons helps us grow together.

Shalom and God bless you.

PS: God is not telling us to allow people to be disrespectful to us, He's just saying how you respond to the disrespect should glorify him.
