Day Of The African Child

PRESS RELEASE

June 16, 2025

CAPWIN URGES INCLUSIVE BUDGETING FOR NEWBORN AND INFANTS.

Comfort And Pregnant Woman Africa Foundation (Capwin) has called on the government and relevant authorities to ensure the inclusion of provisions for newborn and infants.

Capwin in a statement released in port Harcourt and made available to newsmen stated that the near absence and non inclusion of budget provision to support newborn, infant and lactating mothers is responsible for the high rate of malnutrition, illness and death of children.

The Executive Director Capwin, Comfort Ejukwa stated this at the sideline of an event to mark the Day Of The African Child 2025.

According to Ejukwa, this has become necessary as a way of strengthening the provision of the child rights law 2022.
She urged all government agencies and institutions to ensure that budgeting for the state has provisions deliberately targeted at helping parents address the need and rights of children.

The theme for this year's Day Of The African Child is; Planning and budgeting for children's right.

Female ge***al mutilation (FGM) also known as female circumcision or cutting, involves procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female ge***al organs for non-medical reasons.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies FGM into four major types:

1. Type 1: Clitoridectomy: Partial or total removal of the cl****is (a small sensitive organ located in the v***a) and/or the prepuce (cl****al hood).
2. Type 2: Excision: Partial or total removal of the cl****is and the l***a minora (inner lips of the v***a), with or without excision of the l***a majora (outer lips of the v***a).
3. Type 3: Infibulation: Narrowing of the va**nal opening through the cutting and repositioning of the l***a minora and/or l***a majora, sometimes with stitching. The procedure creates a covering over the va**na, with a small opening left for urine and menstrual flow. This opening is often cut open for in*******se and childbirth.
4. Type 4: Other: All other harmful procedures to the female ge***alia for non-medical purposes, for example pricking, piercing, cutting, scraping and burning.

On this International Women's Day, CAPWIN FOUNDATION celebrates the resilience, strength and unwavering spirit of women worldwide. As an organization dedicated to improving maternal health, we recognize the profound impact that women's health has on families and communities.
While progress has been made, women still face preventable challenges in accessing quality healthcare during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care. Maternal mortality remains a stark reality particularly in underserved communities and health disparities persist across the globe.
