Nigerian Army Dismantles Militant Camp in Abia, Recovers Arms and ₦11.75 Million
Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation UDO KA have dismantled a suspected camp belonging to unknown gunmen in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area of Abia State, following a coordinated operation based on credible intelligence.
The raid, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, May 23, targeted a militant base in the Ebubengwa/Abayi Nchokoro community. According to a situation report from the 144 Battalion (Rear), the operation involved six platoons of 49 soldiers each, supported by an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), a gun truck, and six Hilux vehicles.
During the operation, the troops overpowered the armed men and successfully dismantled their camp. A cache of weapons was recovered, including one Rocket-Propelled Gr***de (RPG), one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), four AK-47 rifles, one G3 rifle, three pump-action shotguns, and over 1,400 rounds of various ammunition.
Other items recovered from the site include laptops, mobile phones, CCTV equipment, external hard drives, ritual garments, food supplies, and ₦11.75 million in cash, along with $27,000. Two power generators and a Wi-Fi router were also seized.
In addition, the soldiers destroyed a large shrine believed to be used for spiritual fortification by the militants. Several vehicles and motorcycles found at the location were either confiscated or destroyed. These include three SUVs, two buses, a tricycle, and two motorcycles.
The Army reported that the armed men fled the area under intense fire, leaving trails of blood. While the exact number of casualties on the attackers’ side remains unknown, the Army confirmed one fatality and two injuries among its personnel. The deceased soldier has been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, while the injured are receiving treatment in Aba and are in stable condition.
