Then she rose.

Fear caught their throats, and they knelt. The oldest woman stepped forward and begged for forgiveness. They cleaned the banks, brought kola nut and palm oil, and promised respect.

The next morning, rain fell — slow at first, then plenty. The river danced again, crops lifted their heads, and children ran through puddles laughing.
From that day, nobody joked with Nne’s river again. When the water sparkles under the sun, elders smile and say, “Nne is happy.”

Moral: Respect nature, because the same power that blesses you can also teach you a hard lesson.

The Disobedient Daughter Who Married a Skull

Story: Obiora was a beautiful but very proud and disobedient young girl who refused all the respectable suitors in her village. One day, she met a handsome stranger from a distant village and insisted on marrying him, despite her parents' objections. When she went to his home, she found it empty except for a large, lonely skull. The handsome stranger was a spirit, and as he walked home with Obiora, various parts of his body started falling off. Eventually, only his skull remained, and he captured her, intending to eat her. A wise old woman helped Obiora escape by playing music and luring the skull and other spirits away with mashed yams.
Moral: The tale serves as a cautionary lesson about the dangers of vanity, disobedience, and judging people only by their appearance.

The Tortoise

In the forest, the animals believed that being fast meant being smart. They laughed at Tortoise because he walked slowly and carried a heavy shell.

One dry season, the river dried up and food became hard to find. The animals argued about who would save them. Hare said he would run and find food quickly. Leopard said his strength would lead the way. Everyone was shouting.

Tortoise stayed quiet. He listened and watched.

That night, while the others slept, Tortoise moved slowly through the forest. He followed the ants and noticed signs on the ground. By morning, he knew where water and food were.

The animals rushed into the forest but got lost and tired. Later, they found Tortoise resting under a fruit tree beside clean water.

They felt ashamed.

Tortoise said, “Being fast is good, but being wise is better.”

From that day on, the animals learned to respect wisdom and stay humble, no matter how slow it looks. 🐢
