Chief Isaac Olufusibi Coker (Popularly Known as “Aderupoko”) – The Pioneer Oluwo of Egbaland (Itesi, Abeokuta) was a highly successful agriculturalist and merchant. Known for transporting his goods in heavily loaded canoes from Lagos to Abeokuta along the Ogun River, he often exceeded the typical cargo limit. Upon seeing his overburdened canoe, onlookers would shout, “Ha! A-da-eru-pa-oko!”—which translates loosely to “He who crushes farm loads!” This expression earned him the nickname “Aderupoko.”
He was installed as the inaugural Oluwo (spiritual custodian) of Itesi, Abeokuta in 1897, and became the first bearer of the Ogboni’s symbolic staff of power (Edan or Opa Ase Ogboni), transferring it from the old Itesi settlement in Abeokuta. Chief Olufusibi Coker was renowned for his humanitarian spirit and remarkable generosity.
Between 1887 and 1892, the Egba Council of Chiefs offered him the prestigious position of Alake of Abeokuta. However, his elder sibling, Chief Samuel Sowemimo Coker, declined the offer on his behalf due to concerns that previous Alakes had experienced untimely deaths.
During the period of conflict, Aderupoko raised his own militia, asserting territorial control at key frontier zones. This strategic effort ensured that:
The border between Abeokuta and Ibadan (at Bakatari) fell under his dominion.
The boundary between Remo and Egba territories (at Fidiwo) was also secured under his leadership.
To this day, his descendants retain ownership of these strategic lands in Fidiwo and Bakatari.
In 1913, Chief Aderupoko was among the key financiers who guaranteed a £30,000 loan for the development of Abeokuta’s electricity and water supply infrastructure, a visionary move that laid the groundwork for modernization in Egbaland.
