OLOMONI: MRAG TACKLES IFE INTELLECTUALS, SAYS GROUP TRYING TO SOW DISCORD BETWEEN MODAKEKE AND ILE-IFE

The Modakeke Renewed Action Group has hit back at a group identified as The Ife Intellectuals over its reported rejection of the installation of His Royal Highness, Oba Aderoju Adewale, as the Olomoni of Okuu-Ọmọni, describing the development as an unnecessary attempt to stir tension between Modakeke and Ile-Ife.

The group, in a strongly worded rejoinder signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. John Oyebanji, said the position of The Ife Intellectuals was capable of undermining the cordial relationship between the two communities and the peace-building efforts in Ifeland.

MRAG alleged that The Ife Intellectuals had repeatedly assumed the role of a self-appointed authority on Modakeke affairs, accusing the group of attempting to distort historical realities and create suspicion between the people of Modakeke and Ile-Ife.

The organisation also criticised what it described as an attempt by the group to challenge the authority of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, in relation to traditional matters.

"For a group claiming to be concerned about the dignity of the Ife traditional institution to publicly challenge the authority of the Ọọnirisa, and in the process cast aspersions on the traditional stool, is not an act of intellectualism," MRAG said.

The group said it deliberately held back its response to the earlier statement in order to observe reactions from what it described as genuine sons and daughters of both Modakeke and Ile-Ife.

According to MRAG, the response from peace-loving members of the two communities had demonstrated that the position being advanced by The Ife Intellectuals did not represent the prevailing disposition of the people.

It further described the reported rejection of Oba Aderoju Adewale's installation as "social-media grandstanding", arguing that traditional institutions and relevant authorities remained responsible for determining questions relating to traditional procedures and legitimacy.

MRAG said it would not allow what it described as an attempt to manufacture a crisis where none existed to derail the peaceful relationship between Modakeke and Ile-Ife.

The organisation also urged members of the public, particularly those outside the two communities who may not be sufficiently familiar with their history, to approach narratives emanating from the group with caution.

It alleged that there had been repeated attempts to portray Modakeke people as aggressors and to distort historical realities surrounding the relationship between the two communities.

"We have ignored these provocations repeatedly in the interest of peace, but silence should not be mistaken for inability to respond," the statement added.

The Modakeke group reaffirmed its commitment to peace, truth, mutual respect and what it described as the enduring brotherhood between Modakeke and Ile-Ife.

It, however, warned that while it remained committed to peaceful coexistence, it would resist any attempt by what it called "crisis merchants" to rewrite history or deliberately create hostility between the two communities.

"Modakeke will continue to stand for peace, truth, mutual respect and the enduring brotherhood between Modakeke and Ile-Ife," the group said.

MRAG consequently called on the public to disregard inflammatory rhetoric and reject what it described as efforts to provoke unnecessary tension, urging all stakeholders to allow peace to prevail.

AKORAYE DAY 2026: PLANNING COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES GRAND FINALE DATE

The Planning Committee of the 41st Akoraye Day Celebration has announced Saturday, December 19, 2026, as the date for the Grand Finale of this year’s celebration.

The annual event, which celebrates the rich heritage, unity, resilience and enduring legacy of the Modakeke people, will culminate at the Modakeke Civic Centre, Behind Osun State High Court, Ondo Road, Modakeke, Osun State.

In a statement issued by the Publicity Secretary/Assistant Secretary of the 41st Akoraye Day Celebration, Min. John Oyebanji, the committee said the celebration would provide an opportunity for sons and daughters of Modakeke, as well as friends, associates and well-wishers of the community, to come together in celebration of their shared heritage and identity.

According to Oyebanji, details of the activities lined up for the week-long celebration will be unveiled by the Planning Committee in due course.

He called on members of the community, friends of Modakeke and the general public to save the date and look forward to what promises to be a memorable edition of the annual celebration.

“The 41st Akoraye Day Celebration is a celebration of who we are, our heritage, our unity and the legacy we are building for generations to come. We encourage everyone to save the date and join us in making this year’s celebration a memorable one,” Oyebanji said.

MODAKEKE OPENS TECHNOLOGY CENTRE, TARGETS FREE DIGITAL TRAINING FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Modakeke on Tuesday took another major step towards digital inclusion with the commissioning of the Edwardhye Technology Centre at the former Akọsile Estate, with the facility set to provide free digital training to students across secondary schools in the community.

The technology centre is the product of a digital literacy vision of the Modakeke Progressive International (MPI), USA, which sought to establish a hub where young people in Modakeke could acquire relevant Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills.

The need for a suitable facility, however, became a child of necessity, leading Pastor Abiodun Edward Igbaro, proprietor of the building housing the centre, to provide the edifice for the realisation of the initiative.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Pastor Igbaro said the initiative was born out of the recognition that the world had gone digital and that children in Modakeke needed to be adequately prepared to participate in the emerging digital economy.

“The world has gone digital, hence the need to get our children in Modakeke educated in the digital world,” he said.

Igbaro explained that the MPI USA had conceived the idea of establishing a digital literacy hub but encountered the challenge of securing sufficient space for the project.

According to him, this prompted him to make his building available and develop it into the facility being commissioned.

He said the arrangement had also received further support from MPI USA, which had committed to paying the salaries of staff who would work at the centre, while computers procured for the training programme were already in Nigeria.

The proprietor disclosed that the centre would provide free digital training to students from all secondary schools in Modakeke, with 120 students expected to undergo training at a time.

He appealed to parents to encourage their children to take full advantage of the opportunity and to caution them against damaging the equipment provided at the centre.

“I appeal to parents to warn their children not to spoil these equipment that are being provided for them, but to take good care of them,” he said.

Earlier in his welcome address, Elder Edward Oyewole said the establishment of the centre was a timely response to the growing importance of technology in education and human development.

He noted that in a world increasingly driven by technology, access to ICT had ceased to be a luxury and had become a necessity.

Oyewole said the centre would play an important role in bridging the gap between the analogue and digital generations by giving young people access to relevant technological knowledge and skills.

“In a world driven by technology, access to ICT is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. The ICT centre will serve the purpose of bridging the gap between the analogue and digital generations,” he said.

The Edwardhye Technology Centre comprises a main training hall, control room, executive conference room, separate toilet facilities for male and female users, staff quarters and a solar-powered energy system.

Performing the tape-cutting ceremony, the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Joseph Olubiyi Toriola, commended both the MPI USA and Pastor Igbaro for their respective contributions to the initiative.

The monarch particularly appreciated Igbaro for providing the facility and for his innovation and consistent commitment to the developmental agenda of Modakeke.

He described the investment in digital education as an important contribution to the future of the community's younger generation.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by prominent community leaders and stakeholders, including Chief Benjamin Adeyemi; Alhaji Tajudeen Oke; Prof. Peter Olawuni and other national executives of the Modakeke Progressive Union (MPU); Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ven. Debo Babalola; former national executives of the MPU; Palace Chiefs; Baalẹs and other dignitaries.

The commissioning marks a significant step in the community's drive to expand access to technology and equip its younger generation with skills considered increasingly essential for education, employment and participation in the digital economy.
