“I Wanted to Change the Narrative” — Policeman Returns ₦2.6m Mistaken Transfer

A police constable in Borno State, Alhaji Muhammad, has returned ₦2.6 million wrongly transferred into his bank account, saying his action was driven by a desire to correct negative narrative about the Nigeria Police Force.

The incident came to public attention after a Facebook user, Bello Jafar, praised the officer for his honesty and integrity. Jafar described Muhammad as “a loyal customer of UBA and a police officer of exceptional integrity,” noting that he promptly acted to return the funds to its rightful owner.

According to reports, the money was mistakenly sent by a Moniepoint customer. Upon receiving the credit alert last Thursday, Muhammad immediately realised he was not expecting any payment.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said the officer visited his bank the next morning to report the unexpected transfer.

“When he received the alert, he knew the money was not meant for him. On Friday morning, he went to his bank and asked them to investigate and return it,” Daso said.

The bank later traced the transaction to a UBA branch in Sokoto and contacted the branch manager. Muhammad was then issued a consent form, which allowed the money to be reversed to the original owner.

Daso added that the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajeed, invited the constable for a meeting, where he explained the steps he took to ensure the funds were returned.

Explaining his motivation, Muhammad said he acted out of professionalism and discipline.

“He said he is aware of the negative notions many people have about the police, and he wanted to do the right thing. Discipline is what they were taught in police colleges,” Daso stated.
