In our article this week, we examine what meaningful action looks like through the Lagos State Government's effort towards financing education.
While global leaders prepare to discuss the future of education financing in Rome, Lagos State, Nigeria, is already demonstrating what meaningful action looks like.
Through Project Zero and the newly launched Lagos Education Access Fund (LEAF), more than 36,000 out-of-school children have been returned to classrooms since 2021, with plans underway to support an additional 200,000 children through outcomes-based education financing.
The message is clear: solving the education crisis goes beyond raising billions of dollars. It requires building systems that identify vulnerable children, support families, strengthen communities, and deliver measurable learning outcomes.
Although Lagos has certain structural advantages, its model highlights what is possible when governments, funders, and community organisations collaborate with accountability, innovation, and purpose.
As the world searches for scalable solutions to the global learning crisis, Lagos is already providing part of the answer.

As we begin a new week, we reflect on the words of Queen Elizabeth II.
While reflecting on the anniversaries of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and D-Day, Queen Elizabeth II reminded the world that lasting progress is rarely achieved overnight. True transformation is often the result of small, consistent, and intentional actions taken over time.
As individuals, teams, and organizations, it is important to understand that sustainable impact begins with the little things — the timely ex*****on of tasks, the commitment to excellence, the consistency in service, and the dedication to purpose.
Every meaningful achievement starts with a single step. Every successful outcome is built on discipline, persistence, and attention to detail.
This week, let us remain intentional in all we do, recognizing that no effort is too small when it contributes to a greater vision and collective progress.
Wishing everyone a purposeful, productive, and impactful week ahead.

Menstrual hygiene management remains a significant challenge for many adolescent girls and young women, particularly in underserved communities.
Limited access to affordable sanitary products, poor knowledge of menstrual health, and stigma surrounding menstruation often affect girls’ confidence, health, and productivity.
To address this gap, a practical training session on reusable sanitary pad production was organized by the Atlas Initiative with support from .aid, in partnership with , at the Milecent Foundation Safe Space in Likosi, Ogun State.
The activity also integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) sensitization, as well as basic medical screening services, to provide a holistic empowerment approach.

Every government policy has a bureaucratic structure that ensures those policies do not remain only on paper, but are properly implemented.
The UBEC Act of 2004 is a binding law that guarantees every child access to basic education, regardless of their social or medical condition.
However, government policies are not meant to sit in official records alone; they are designed to improve society and create better opportunities for our children.
As citizens, we must engage the appropriate government channels to demand accountability and transparency in the implementation of policies that directly impact our lives.
Here are six key individuals responsible for ensuring that children in Nigeria have access to basic education.

Welcome to a new week and the first week of a new month.
This week, we reflect on the timeless words of Muhammad Ali: “Don’t count the days, make the days count.”
In a fast-paced world where activities, deadlines, and routines often define our days, this quote reminds us that what truly matters is not just the time spent, but the value, impact, and purpose created through our actions
As we move through the week, may we all remain intentional about making every day meaningful — through service, impact, growth, and positive contributions to the people and communities around us.
Here’s to a purposeful and impactful week ahead.

At ATLAS Initiative we have a holistic system towards sending out-of-school children back to school. We don't just identify children and send them to school.
We engage all stakeholders responsible for the primary education of these children and create a pathway that ensures that these children stay in school.

The ₦441.92 billion allocation to the Universal Basic Education Commission in the 2026 budget reflects a clear priority—ensuring that teachers and education personnel are paid.
However, beyond sustaining the workforce, there remains a pressing need to strengthen the foundation on which learning takes place.
With the overwhelming share of the budget directed toward personnel costs, investment in capital expenditure—such as classrooms, learning facilities, and school infrastructure—remains significantly limited. Yet, it is this very infrastructure that enables effective teaching, improves learning conditions, and drives long-term outcomes.
A functional education system requires more than salaries; it demands an environment where both teachers and students can thrive.
As such, there is a clear call to government and relevant stakeholders to increase investment in capital projects to complement personnel spending and build a more efficient, inclusive, and impactful education system.
Because while sustaining the system is important,
transforming it is essential.
