Goals from Rodrygo and Kylian Mbappe eased the pressure on Xabi Alonso as his Real Madrid team beat Alaves 2-1 in LaLiga.

Match Report
Los Blancos started Sunday's game seven points adrift of Barcelona at the summit, with a run of two wins in seven matches leading to intense speculation about Alonso's future.

But his team picked up a much-needed three points at the Estadio de Mendizorroza, having hit the front through a wonderful finish from Mbappe in the 24th minute.

Having taken in Jude Bellingham's pass in the left channel, Mbappe ran at the backtracking Alaves defence before curling a delightful effort into the top-right corner.

Madrid had already gone close via Rodrygo by that point, and they thought they had a second goal shortly after Mbappe's opener, only for Bellingham to be penalised for handball when he brought down Arda Guler's cross to score.

Federico Valverde then dragged a shot wide early in the second half, before Alaves goalkeeper Antonio Sivera thwarted Mbappe and Vinicius Junior with an excellent double save.

And Alaves dragged themselves level in the 68th minute, with substitute Carlos Vicente finding the top corner after being played in behind by Antonio Blanco, just 43 seconds after entering the fray.

But Madrid would not be denied, with Vinicius the architect of their 76th-minute winner with an explosive run down the left, with his centre being prodded home by Rodrygo.

Data Debrief: Brazilian connection boosts Madrid

It looked as though Madrid might drop further behind Barcelona in the title race when Alaves got back on level terms, but their pair of Brazilian attackers bailed Alonso out.

Vinicius has now supplied 11 assists for Rodrygo for Real Madrid across all competitions, more than double the amount by any other player (Luka Modric had five for him).

Mbappe's goal, meanwhile, was his seventh at the end of a carry in all competitions this season – three more than any other player.

Madrid were perhaps slightly fortunate to take three points, having only amassed 1.24 expected goals (xG) to Alaves' 1.36, though Los Blancos did outshoot their hosts 13 to six.

Dortmund 2-2 Bodo Glimt: Brandt double not enough as Dortmund held to draw.

Julian Brandt scored two goals for Borussia Dortmund but they had to settle for a point as visitors Bodo/Glimt twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw

Match Report
The draw leaves Dortmund 10th in the table with 11 points from their six games, while Bodo/Glimt remain winless and in 32nd place with three draws from their six fixtures.

Brandt gave Dortmund the lead following a poor pass from Haitam Aleesami, but the latter made amends when he equalised just before halftime.

The home side applied plenty of pressure after the break and were rewarded early as Brandt netted his second with a tap-in from a rebound, before Jens Petter Hauge restored parity again for the visitors 15 minutes from the end.

"We started to play erratically," Dortmund captain Nico Schlotterbeck told DAZN. "The players who came in lost every ball. Some were not aware of how important this game was."

Bodo/Glimt are enjoying a debut season in the Champions League and while they are yet to register a win, there have been signs they are getting to grips with the competition and this was another accomplished display.

Dortmund will feel they had enough chances to win it though with the lion’s share of possession and 22 shots at goal, but wayward finishing and some fine goalkeeping denied them three points.

The home side took the lead on 18 minutes as a quick counter-attack after Aleesami's poor pass in midfield created a three-on-one situation for the hosts and Fabio Silva picked out Brandt on the left, who supplied a composed finish.

Maximilian Beier put a free header wide of goal for the hosts shortly afterwards as the visitors drew level three minutes before the break.

Patrick Berg’s delivery from a short corner was perfect for Aleesami to head into the back of the net and make up for his earlier error.

Dortmund restored their advantage five minutes after halftime as Brandt scored his second of the game.

Beier's header was only parried by Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin and Brandt was left with a simple tap-in from the rebound.

But the visitors kept pushing for an equaliser and levelled the score 15 minutes from the end as Hauge finished emphatically when the ball fell to him in the box.

Real Madrid 1-2 Man City: Haaland scores as City edge closer to top-eight spot.

Man City strengthened their bid to finish in the top eight of the Champions League league phase with a 2-1 comeback win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Match Report
Manchester City came from behind to defeat Real Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League and pile more pressure on Xabi Alonso.

Erling Haaland's 43rd-minute penalty completed a first-half turnaround for the visitors at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid, playing without the injured Kylian Mbappe, who was an unused substitute, took the lead after a positive start to Wednesday's contest, when Rodrygo snapped a 32-game scoreless streak with a fine finish from a tight angle.

Rodrygo's opener came in the 28th minute, by which time Madrid had already had a penalty awarded but then overturned by VAR, with Matheus Nunes' foul on Vinicius Junior taking place outside of the box.

But Madrid wilted after Nico O'Reilly turned in his first Champions League goal from point-blank range after Thibaut Courtois spilled Josko Gvardiol's header.

City's comeback was complete eight minutes later, when Haaland slotted home from the spot after he had been hauled down by Antonio Rudiger, with the penalty awarded after a VAR check.

Courtois made a superb double save to keep Madrid in it, but Los Blancos could not add to their solitary shot on target in a second half that saw Vinicius squander two great chances while Endrick hit the crossbar, as City surged up to fourth spot in the standings.

Data Debrief: Madrid miss Mbappe as City capitalise

The pressure truly is on Alonso, who is under massive scrutiny just six months after joining Madrid. There is even speculation that this game could prove to be his last in charge if he failed to win it. Time will tell on that front.

Alonso will lament that Mbappe was not fit enough to feature, and without the Frenchman, who has been involved in eight goals in seven Champions League games against City, Madrid were toothless, despite generating plenty of openings. They managed just one shot on target from 16 attempts in total.

City, on the other hand, had eight shots on target from 12 attempts. They accumulated 2.58 expected goals (xG), albeit a good chunk of that was due to the penalty.

Haaland has now netted 51 Champions League goals in the 50 games he has started in the competition. His overall tally stands at 55 goals in 54 appearances. The 25-year-old became only the third player to score in four or more consecutive Champions League away fixtures for City, after Sergio Aguero (seven in 2019) and Phil Foden (four in 2024).

Club Brugge 0-3 Arsenal: Marvellous Madueke keeps Arteta's men perfect.

Noni Madueke scored twice as Arsenal maintained their perfect record in the Champions League with a comfortable 3-0 win at Club Brugge on Wednesday.

The electric winger scored a sensational opener midway through the first half at Jan Breydel Stadium and headed in an easy second just after the break.

Gabriel Martinelli then got in on the act with a stupendous goal of his own as Arsenal closed on direct entry to the last 16 by making it six wins from six in the league phase.

Dani van den Heuvel had already parried Martin Odegaard's stinging drive and Piero Hincapie struck the base of the right-post by the time Madueke opened the scoring in stunning fashion.

The England winger drove forward and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top-right corner from 25 yards, before Ben White's thumping header and another curling effort from Madueke brought the best out of Van den Heuvel.

It took just two second-half minutes for Martin Zubimendi's deep left-wing cross to be nodded home by Madueke, and Martinelli then bent a sublime bending effort into the top-right corner to essentially end the game as a contest.

There was almost a heart-warming moment for Gabriel Jesus, back after 332 days out with injury, who smacked one against the crossbar after entering the fray as a substitute, while Ethan Nwaneri drew two stops from Van den Heuvel in injury time.

Data Debrief: Madueke shines, while Martinelli breaks new ground

Arsenal saw their lead at the top of the Premier League trimmed to two points after losing 2-1 at Aston Villa last time out but, led by Madueke, returned to winning ways here.

The winger finished with a team-high four shots, three of which were on target, from an xG of 1.01.

All three of Madueke's Arsenal goals have now come in the Champions League, while he has scored in successive European games for the first time.

Martinelli, meanwhile, has scored in all five of his Champions League outings this term – becoming the first Gunners player to score in five consecutive outings in Europe's premier competition.

Victory here also means Arsenal have won six straight games to start a single edition of the European Cup/Champions League for the first time, becoming just the fifth English team to do so (after Manchester United, Leeds United, Liverpool and Manchester City).

Tottenham 3-0 Slavia Praha: Kudus & Simons net two penalties to secure 3 points.

Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons both scored second-half penalties as Tottenham earned a 3-0 win over Slavia Prague to get them back to winning ways in the Champions League.

Spurs boosted their hopes of a top-eight finish, while putting a dent in Slavia's own hopes of making it through to the play-offs.

It was almost a dream start for Spurs after Wilson Odobert's weaving run resulted in a drilled cross from the left. Richarlison met it first time, but Jindrich Stanek superbly stuck out an arm to deflect it away from goal.

Stanek continued to stand strong, smothering a Kudus strike before denying a Richarlison from long range, while Mojmir Sadilek headed a golden opportunity over at the other end.

But it was David Zima's own goal that broke the deadlock as Cristian Romero's flick-on from a corner struck him and flew past Stanek 26 minutes in.

Five minutes into the second half, they doubled their lead. A sliding Youssoupha Sanyang blocked a Pedro Porro cross with his arm, and Kudus emphatically put away the resulting penalty.

Mathys Tel could have added a third just seconds after coming on. After racing down the left, he cut inside and drilled a low, angled shot across goal, but Stanek was equal to it.

But Simons did get on the scoresheet. Having won the penalty after being brought down by Igoh Ogbu, the Dutchman snuck his low shot past Stanek into the bottom-right corner.

Data Debrief: Spurs hit a century

Spurs look to have settled back down after a slight wobble in form, with this their second consecutive win in all competitions.

Zima's own goal is the third they have benefited from in this season's Champions League, and it was also Spurs' 100th goal in the competition (59 games played).

Thomas Frank's side have not been known for their strong home form this season, but they had 16 shots in this game, meaning they have had 10+ attempts in 14 of their last 16 Champions League matches on home soil.

Had it not been for Stanek, Spurs could have been out of sight in this game, having accumulated 2.56 expected goals (xG), though Slavia put up a fight with 12 shots of their own (worth 0.99 xG).

Barcelona 2-1 Frankfurt: Kounde's double quick-fire headers seal comeback win.

Ansgar Knauff fired the visitors ahead on Tuesday, only for Kounde to inspire a second-half turnaround to move Barcelona up to 14th and just two points shy of the top eight.

Robert Lewandowski saw an early strike ruled out for offside in the build-up against Raphinha, before Gerard Martin stung the palms of Michael Zetterer from range in a one-sided opening.

But it was Eintracht who struck first against the run of play when Knauff beat Alejandro Balde to Nathaniel Brown's throughball and steered into the bottom-right corner in the 21st minute.

The visitors almost doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time, though Ellyes Skhiri's first-time effort flew just over the top-right corner.

A half-time change made the difference, however, as substitute Marcus Rashford curled in for Kounde to head home in the 50th minute.

Defender Kounde then struck again just three minutes later, rising the highest to nod past Setterer after a teasing Lamine Yamal delivery from the left-hand side.

Ferran Torres whistled a fierce effort wide as Barcelona sought to put the game to bed, though Eintracht could not mount a late comeback regardless.

Data Debrief: Yamal makes more history

Yamal has now been directly involved in 14 goals in the Champions League for Barcelona (seven goals, seven assists).

His well-weighted delivery for Kounde's second saw Yamal overtake Kylian Mbappe (13) for the most goal involvements by a player aged 18 or younger in the competition's history (since 1992-93).

Kounde also became the first Barcelona player to score two headed goals in a single Champions League match, though Hansi Flick will have felt a victory was the least his side deserved.

They accumulated 1.43 expected goals (xG) to Eintracht's 0.77, eventually managing to get over the line for a vital victory in their quest for automatic qualification to the knockout stages.

Inter 0-1 Liverpool: Szoboszlai's last-moment penalty ends Reds' winless run.

Dominik Szoboszlai's 88th-minute penalty got Liverpool back to winning ways as they edged Inter 1-0 in the Champions League.

Match Report

Liverpool were without Mohamed Salah, following his explosive post-match interview after their 3-3 draw against Leeds United, but the Reds ground out a victory at San Siro.

Inter struggled at the start and were not helped by losing both Hakan Calhanoglu and Francesco Acerbi to injury, either side of Yann Sommer making a double save to keep out Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch.

Liverpool then thought they had taken the lead 32 minutes in when Ibrahima Konate headed home from close range. However, it was ruled out after a lengthy VAR check as Virgil van Dijk had nodded the ball onto Hugo Ekitike's arm in the build-up.

The hosts stepped up the pressure after that, with Nicolo Barella curling a free-kick narrowly wide before Piotr Zielinski and Lautaro Martinez both tested a stretching Alisson in stoppage time.

There was little to split the sides at the start of the second half, with Ekitike's long-range drive comfortably held by Sommer shortly after the hour.

Arne Slot's side had a slight edge, though, keeping Inter under pressure as substitute Conor Bradley forced Sommer into a sprawling near-post save.

But the decisive moment came late on as Alessandro Bastoni needlessly dragged Florian Wirtz's shirt, and Szoboszlai rifled his spot-kick into the left side of the net to send Liverpool eighth.

Data Debrief: Fortress San Siro breached

Inter were unbeaten in 18 Champions League matches at home before this, and looked set to hold out for a point. Instead, they suffered a second straight loss in the competition and lost ground on the top of the table by slipping down to fifth.

For a long time it was evenly matched, but Liverpool finished with 1.47 expected goals (xG) from their 12 shots to Inter's 0.43 xG from nine, 0.79 of that came from the penalty.

The win was thanks to Szoboszlai taking his moment. He has been directly involved in more goals than any other Liverpool player this season (10 – five goals, five assists).

Szoboszlai also created a joint-team-high of two chances, played the most passes in the final third (18) and provided four crosses, more than any of his team-mates.

Atalanta 2-1 Chelsea: Blues suffer comeback as Ketelaere & Scamacca score.

Charles De Ketelaere provided a hammer blow to Chelsea's top-eight hopes in the Champions League after his late goal inspired Atalanta to a 2-1 win.

Match Report

Having set up Gianluca Scamacca's second-half equaliser, the Belgium forward powered past Robert Sanchez with seven minutes remaining.

His goal lifted Atalanta to third in the 36-team standings, eight places and three points above Enzo Maresca's side with just two league-phase games remaining.

The Italian side should have taken the lead after just six minutes when Ademola Lookman's near-post effort squirmed under Sanchez, only for De Ketelaere to be caught flat-footed on the rebound.

Reece James' left-sided cross for a cute first-time finish by Joao Pedro was then initially ruled out for offside, before the VAR intervened to overturn the decision and award the Brazilian his 25th-minute opener.

James almost turned from creator to finisher early into the second half, but dragged narrowly wide before Lookman's tap-in was ruled out for offside in an immediate Atalanta response.

The hosts soon found the 55th-minute leveller, however, as De Ketelaere crossed for Scamacca to peel off towards the back post and thump a header past Sanchez.

Scamacca could have sent Atalanta in front just seven minutes later, but his glancing header was clawed away by Sanchez.

However, De Ketelaere stepped up for the decisive moment when his wicked effort deflected off Marc Cucurella and in, before Marco Carnesecchi denied both Alejandro Garnacho and Joao Pedro late on.

Data Debrief: Chelsea falter after half-time lead for once

Chelsea had gone unbeaten in 41 Champions League games when leading at half-time, but they suffered their first such defeat since September 2013 here.

Scamacca started the turnaround, and he has now either scored or assisted a goal in each of his last three games in all competitions for Atalanta, after managing just one goal involvement in the nine before that.

But the game belonged to Scamacca's team-mate De Ketelaere, who created the joint-most chances in this game (three, along with Reece James).

Raffaele Palladino will feel his side deserved the win, having accumulated 1.74 expected goals (xG) to Chelsea's 1.25.
