Personality, Poise, Panache ... The Quintessential Janet Adetu |

Not many people are able to make a sterling first impression. One so memorable that curiosity is piqued over a long period of time and the question comes up ever so often “Who is this woman?” Such is the impression I got when I first met her, and I have’d like to call her The First Lady of Protocol and Etiquette Consulting.

Ever heard of The Panache Advantage? I present to you Janet Adetu.

The graduate of Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School, Heriot Watt University, Scotland, UK, started her professional journey as an external financial auditor. She has worked in companies of global repute such as KPMG, Ernst & Young but she was not satisfied. There was void in her that she needed to fill. “There comes a time in one’s career that you feel you can explore in more territories.” Janet said. And like a trait any successful business person must have, she embraced the challenge with nothing but great hopes. Did her risk pay off at the end of the day? Well from the number of awards she had gained over the years, I can confidently, SURE!!!

From what started as just a way of developing her personal peoples skills during her days as an external auditor. She recounts that by virtue of the nature of her job, her relationship with her colleagues was quite limited; she wore more suits of dark colour and had a serious and strict disposure. But then, when she realized that by working just as hard on her personal image as an auditor by becoming more credible, more accommodating, more friendly, more approachable and more presentable and stylish at the same time, her turn-over increased and made more professional friends. Mission accomplished. “IMAGE IS EVERYTHING,” says the 49 year old Image Consultant.

Bamisebi and Dele are two products of her training and they swear by it as it helped polish their professionalism, enhanced their interpersonal skills and operate their personal and professional best.

The Protocol and Etiquette Consulting business is quite new in Nigeria so I asked how it has been accepted so far. “JSK was born out of the need to add value. Many corporate organizations have seen the need to improve their brand image, work better on their staff and that’s where we come in. JSK is aimed at becoming one of the most respected protocol and etiquette consultancy practices in Nigeria.” Janet said.

Having spent most of her youth in different territories, learning different cultures, this successful career woman and mother of (3/4) was determined to follow her philosophy. “I believe strongly in adding value to other people and other lives.

Making a different to my generation is my mantra.” She originally started her first three years in Nairobi, Kenya before moving to Nigeria. Following a career in Protocol and Etiquette Management was not a ride in a park for Janet even though she had strong support from her family. She was faced with two schools of thought, the older and he younger. The former felt the need for it while the latter were less interested. Secondly, it was a relatively new business terrain in the country at the moment. This didn’t stop the vivacious wife of the former Executive Director of Guinness Nigeria

“I like to entertain a lot, I like to host people. And people used to say there’s a way you do your things, the way you entertain most people, there is something exceptionally unique about it and at the moment I didn’t know anything about Etiquette or Protocol. They would say the you behave, the way you conduct yourself and after putting those words together, I did a little bit of research and I didn’t know it was a profession and a good one at that.” This was how the journey began for the Ogun State born economist started. She began increasing her knowledge about the profession, travelling to five different countries to gain exposure and getting certified.

Janet Adetu Over the years, her career experience has cut across Finance, Business Development, Bookkeeping, Accounting and Auditing for a range of international companies. She has therefore gained a wealth of experience and has consulted for several blue chip companies based in Nigeria. She is a certified Corporate Image and Business Etiquette Consultant. As a corporate trainer, Janet is a recognized expert in the field of corporate etiquette and professional image and international protocol. She has been a speaker at meetings and trainings conferences in Nairobi and United Kingdom. She has worked mainly with a number of corporate clients, professional and private individuals, groups and youth impacting their lives with various seminars and workshops to improve their social graces, image, style and soft skills.

Janet Adetu is the author of Best Etiquette Strategies: Etiquette Tips for Everyday Polish. She gained broad etiquette training from St Louis,Missouri, she went further to extend her knowledge basis and certification in Virginia, Washington, Atlanta, Canada, London and UK.

Apart from professionalism, Janet Adetu is a woman with an enviable sense of style. One of the things I noticed most while I helped her arrange her pieces for the photo session was her interest in pearls. This woman has a bank full of pearls. So I asked her what her fascination was about and she said smiling, “Although I am married to an Ijebu man, I am still very British in my ways. One of the staple jewelry pieces among Britons are pearls. I just love its simplistic yet graceful, stylish and elegant mix.”

Colours mean a lot to the ever so spirited to Janet. “There are three most powerful colours in the world, White, Red and Black. With these colours, especially in the corporate industry you can never go wrong.” She said as she danced to Happy by Pharrel Wiliams.(insert a photo here)

After a few question and answer session, she took the crew to her training room where she had just concluded a training session on professional communication skills with some young graduates. She complained bitterly about how the younger generation is so engrossed with the social media slangs that some send formal mails using them. She recounts seeing a couple of resumes written with slangs.

In addition to being a corporate etiquette and image advisor. She also loves to give back to the society as she is an active member of the Ghana International Women’s Club, Executive Member of British Women in Ghana Active member, Golden Hearts Trust, a children’s heart foundation and so many more.

Her final words are looking good is serious business and corporate etiquette is becoming ever more important. Be humble, have proper manners or at least learn them, let everything about you speak elegance, grace and executive presence. Identify your own brand and discover your unique identity that makes you stand out conspicuously from the rest and it will place you in the higher ranking for achievement

"Meeting Omotola Ekeinde” a photographer's perspective.

It was a Monday morning on a 25th of February 2019, my phone rang, I picked it up “Hello good morning” a response “Hello morning, My name is Omotola Ekeinde, I need a creative photographer” I frizzed for a minute, “Somebody recommended you, and we need you to create an idea for a PR promotion shoot but the snag is, we need the service a day after tomorrow”

I hesitated “a day after tomorrow” “is there a problem” she said “No, not at all, we would do our best” "Good! I would send you my personal assistants' number, he would send you a part payment and communicating with you going forward" that's good, we look forward to the project.

Like the superhero in my child hood carton, my thought traveled around the world as if the twelve dragons and the cave in Zulu were in crisis mood to set my thought free, finally I got an Idea.

I jumped up and pulled my pen like a sword as though a demon possessed, I wrote furiously at my note pad like stabbing an enemies’ stomach, for the next three minuets I scribbling my thought. "I got it" I said "the idea is aliv."

I immediately opened my search engine and surf the web to fine those linking puzzle of my imagination; stylist, makeup artist, location and most importantly the mood board.

I had worked for almost twenty four hours continually without blinking and mental fatigue start jacking in but I told myself "I would push until am done with my search".

I called my collaborators but there phone rang to the limit and time was an essence, so I jumped on a Go Kada to Lekki peninsula where we meet and concluded the plan.

All done we’re ready to ride. I meet my contact and chat. "Bamisebi Richard, I’m the perception architect”. “Charles, Omotola's PA”. "Graet" we shook hands.

We need to have a recce with Omotola before the shoot commence Charles agreed, immediately he called Omotola and she also agreed, we went straight to har room at the hotel were the shoot is scheduled.

Eventually I meet Omotola Ekeinde I was surprise it wasn't Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, although she was also as stunning as the Omotola Jelade my recce was concluded time to shoot.

It took the hole day to shoot at the end it was worth it. The next day we immediately began the post production, that took another day in the studio editing

Hello! beautiful people, the day shines! what a stunning time it is, a ray of light leaks through the blinds and assaults my eyelids.

I turn my body, breaking the seal of my warm imprint on the bed.

A looming glow invades the room; darkness turns to soft shadows.

A low-level crisis begins. The day is about to break free, live it! love it! it's yours!

Good morning 💃

Good morning Lagos😀,

We're always excited talking with you, we guess this feeling is mutual.

You know, everytime we have a positive exchange with you, it's like a eureka moment for us.

Here is one of our exchange with a WhatsApp friend about not opening you ignorant to a knowledgeable counsel, he said "fear grows in darkness, if you think there's a scarecrow around, turn on the light/right counsel"

He was spot-on, turning on the light and finding out how others really see you/your business, can be a scary prospect. Staying in the dark and not knowing however, can be costly.

So we advise, talk to us at Outright we can be a help in terms of you individual or business perception challenge😉.
