Echoes from the Fire
Everyone in Ama-Ache village knew never to go near the old Awele compound.
It had been empty since the fire.
They said the flames weren’t natural — they didn’t burn wood, only people.
When the family screamed, the neighbors said the sound didn’t echo…
It sank.
Twenty years passed.
And then I got curious.
I was filming for my horror series.
I thought it’d be the perfect content: real local ghost story, dramatic ruins, easy clicks.
I should’ve listened.
When I stepped inside, it was cold — too cold. Like the fire never left, only turned inward.
The walls weren’t just charred… they were whispering.
They called my name.
At first, I thought it was the wind.
But the whispers grew louder near the collapsed room in the back.
That’s when I saw the shapes.
Dark figures — moving along the walls, but casting no shadows.
They looked like people on fire, but the flames curled inward, eating their screams.
My camera died.
My phone wouldn’t turn on.
And every exit I tried led back to the same room.
The room with the mirror.
Except I wasn’t in it.
Just… the whispers.
And behind the glass — my face… but smiling, burning, staring back.
I don’t remember how I escaped.
I only know that now, mirrors flicker when I walk past.
And at night, I hear the compound whispering again.
Calling.
Waiting.
